A two-day Raspberry Pi workshop for Macau Pui Ching Middle School

The Department organized a two-day Raspberry Pi workshop for 20 students from Macau Pui Ching Middle School on 11-12 July. The workshop covers topics from the basic setup of the operating system, control of simple input/output devices and the applications of a camera to implement object tracking.   In addition to attending the workshop, students also visited the Smart Materials Laboratory and the PolyU House of Innovation.

MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node

The creation of MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node was announced in November 2015, and its focus is on cultivating the innovation capabilities of students, increasing opportunities and accelerating the path from idea to impact.  The Showcase Day June 2017 is a two-week programme for MIT Entrepreneurship and Maker Skills Integrator (MEMSI), which comprises learning in a dynamic classroom environment and factory visitors in Dongguan, Huizhou and Shenzhen. Totally 26 highly promising students from MIT and from universities in Hong Kong have selected, of which PolyU EE has 1 undergraduate and 1 research postgraduate students joined this programme.  This is a golden chance that our students could experience team building, problem solving, building something new with students from other disciplines, as well as assistance from MIT alumni mentors.

Research seminar on “Ultrafast Light Manipulation in a Single Nanowire”

Speaker: Prof. Limin Tong, State Key Laboratory of Modern Optical Instrumentation, College of Optical Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, China. Date: 26 June 2017 (Monday) Time: 4:00 pm Venue: CD634, PolyU Abstract: Integration of miniaturized elements has been a major driving force behind modern ultrafast photonics. One-dimensional optical nanowires or nanofibers have emerged as potential building blocks for miniature photonic circuits and devices for light manipulation. We demonstrate here ultrafast light propagation, modulation and correlation on the single-nanowire scale. Based on nonlinear responses of light waveguided in these 1-dimensional structures, we show ultrafast optical modulation in graphene-activated nanofibers/nanowires and chip-integrated CdS nanowires. Also, by imaging the transverse second harmonic generation (TSHG) from CdS and CdTe nanowires, and converting the TSHG spatial image into the temporal profile of the pulses, we demonstrate ultrafast optical correlation with pulse energy down to femto-joules. About the speaker: Prof. Limin Tong received his PhD from Zhejiang University, China in 1997, and is currently a professor and Dean of the College of Optical Science and Engineering at Zhejiang University. His research interests are in nanophotonics and fiber optics, with an emphasis on nanofiber/nanowire photonics and devices. He received the Chang Jiang Scholars (Ministry of Education, China) in 2012, the WANG Daheng Optics Prize (Chinese Optics Society) in 2007, and the National Science Foundation for Outstanding Young Scholars (China) in 2004, respectively. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America, and an Associate Editor of Optica.

IEEE Distinguished Lecture on "Evolution of EMS Control Centers – PMU Synchrophasor Solutions"

Jay Giri is Director of Power Systems Technology and Strategic Initiatives at GE Grid Software Solutions in Redmond, Washington, USA. Date: 30 June 2017 (Friday) Time: 18:30 – 20:00 Venue: Room FJ 302, Main Campus, PolyU  Abstract Energy Management Systems (EMS) have been deployed for decades at utility control centers to manage the electricity grid in real-time. Today these EMS capabilities are poised to be enhanced quite dramatically with growth of synchrophasor PMU measurements. Solutions to decentralize management of the grid are also being introduced – these include Distribution Management Systems, Substation Automation and advances in grid control devices. These new solutions will help us manage the uncertainties and challenges of the future smart grid. This presentation will describe:   • The history and evolution of the EMS from its digital genesis in the 1970’s. • The primary functions of a modern EMS • Emerging new industry drivers & emerging new technology trends • Impact of growth of microgrids, renewables and distributed generation on the EMS • Growth of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) and synchrophasor measurements worldwide • Wide area monitoring (WAMS) and wide area control (WAMPAC) solutions • Modern advanced fast-acting grid control devices • Concluding thoughts on the challenges and opportunities to manage the future grid Speaker Dr. Jay Giri. Departmental Staff Retreat 2016/17

The Department has successfully held its annual Staff Retreat at Hotel ICON. This one-day event was held on 9th June 2017, with the participation of 23 academic and teaching staff members.    Professor Tam kicked off the Retreat by updating staff members on various departmental development like renovation, space usage, success on students’ recruitment etc. This year, the retreat again led staff members to go through topics like Programmes’ updates on streamlining of subjects, students’ recruitment, examination matters; Teaching and Learning matters covering TPS scheme, final year projects, student activities and other related matters, and updates of research activities.    We continue to strive for a more casual and relaxing environment for staff to share and discuss. Through this annual gathering, more innovative and inspiring ideas are obtained.

RS Gathering for 2016/17

The Department organized a Research Student Gathering for 2016/17 on 2nd June 2017 (Friday), in which it serves as a platform for all research students who are in different research disciplines to meet and share on their studies at PolyU.  In this half-day activity, with first time introducing the poster session, 6 PhD students were invited to give a 15-minute presentation on their research topics while another 16 PhD students were selected to join the poster session.  Department Head, DRC Chair and some academic staff also participated the event.

Congratulations to the students graduating from Department of Electrical Engineering in 2017!

The Graduation Tea Reception was held on 22 May 2017 to celebrate the graduation of students after weeks of examination and share the joy and happiness with friends and teachers.   Dr W.C. Lo, Associate Head of the Department, kicked-off the event with welcoming remarks.  He highlighted that the Department always treasures a close linkage with our alumni and is always glad to hear updates from them regarding their job prospects and personal advancement.  He took the opportunity to extend the warmest congratulations to our graduates and wish our graduates every success in the future!   During the tea reception, the Outstanding Final Year Project Awards and gifts were presented to seven graduating students who have excellent performance in the Final Year Project. Eight certificates and gifts were presented to the student representatives and student helpers to express our appreciation for their outstanding contributions and commitment to the Department. Over 60 graduates and staff members participated this gathering, and we all enjoyed this memorable afternoon.   Once again, hearty congratulations to all our graduates and best wishes in their future endeavours!

Maker Faire 2017

Engineering Club members co-host Mini and Basic ROV workshop with CityU ROV team as one of Star Events during the 2017 Maker Faire Hong Kong in April. The teams created a record for building 100 mini-rovs on the same day. In addition, teams from secondary school attended the Basic ROV workshop to learn how to build an underwater robot using simple components.

Campus visit in March

Students from CARITAS TUEN MUN MARDEN FDN SEC SCHOOL and UNITED CHRISTIAN COLLEGE (KOWLOON EAST) visited the Department on 31-March. Our visitors include 16 Secondary 3 students from Caritas, 4 Secondary 2 students from United Christian and their teachers. The students are all ethnic minorities.   During the 90-minute visit, students were introduced to the basic principles of electromagnetism and how electromagnetism is used in the power industry. In addition, students were given the chance to apply the concept by developing an electric train and a basic motor. They all able to build the train and motor successfully.
