Maker Faire 2017

Engineering Club members co-host Mini and Basic ROV workshop with CityU ROV team as one of Star Events during the 2017 Maker Faire Hong Kong in April. The teams created a record for building 100 mini-rovs on the same day. In addition, teams from secondary school attended the Basic ROV workshop to learn how to build an underwater robot using simple components.

Campus visit in March

Students from CARITAS TUEN MUN MARDEN FDN SEC SCHOOL and UNITED CHRISTIAN COLLEGE (KOWLOON EAST) visited the Department on 31-March. Our visitors include 16 Secondary 3 students from Caritas, 4 Secondary 2 students from United Christian and their teachers. The students are all ethnic minorities.   During the 90-minute visit, students were introduced to the basic principles of electromagnetism and how electromagnetism is used in the power industry. In addition, students were given the chance to apply the concept by developing an electric train and a basic motor. They all able to build the train and motor successfully.

Alumni Re-Union Gathering

The Department is very delighted to have invited over 100 alumni and final year students to join this unforgettable re-union gathering.  We appreciate our alumni for their time and efforts to ‘re-connect’ with EE.  We look forward to have more events of this kind to come!

PolyU Summer Programme 2016

Date: 20 July 2016   The 1-Day Summer Programme – Build a Smart Car was conducted on 20th July. The programme aims to promote the TSE programme to secondary school students and there were 26 Form 4 and 5 students participated in this one-day workshop. Participants were given a chance to experience the technologies of image processing, RaspberryPi and motor control. We are glad to know that this programme is well-received by the students. This will motivate us to arrange more activities of this kind to arouse youngsters’ interests in engineering.

STAFF RETREAT 2016

Date: 8th June 2016 Venue: Hotel ICON   The Department has successfully held its annual Staff Retreat at Hotel ICON.  This one-day event was held on 8th June 2016, with the participation of 24 Full-time and Visiting academic and teaching staff members.   This year, the retreat led staff members to go through topics like Review on 4-year Degree Programmes, Teaching and Learning matters covering TPS scheme, streamlining of subjects, final year projects, student activities and other related matters, and updates of research activities.   We have tried to provide a casual and relaxing environment for staff to share and discuss.  Through this annual gathering, more innovative and inspiring ideas are obtained.

Photonic Research Centre Seminar: High Symbol Rate Coherent Optical Transmission Systems

Speaker: Dr. Greg Raybon - Nokia Bell Labs, Crawford Hill Date:  31st May 2016 Time: 11:00 a.m. Venue: R1108, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Commercial optical interface-rates are approaching 1-Terabit/s but which technology will reach this goal is not clear.  We review the use of high-speed electronics to achieve symbol-rates up to 107-Gbaud and their application to coherent optical systems. Specifically, we show experimental research results from recent experiments using single and dual-carrier 16QAM and 64QAM systems and to achieve 1-Terabit/s.

Graduation Tea Reception 2016

Date: 10th May 2016 Time: 3:45 p.m. Venue: POLYU V1201   The Graduation Tea Reception was held on 10 May 2016 to celebrate the graduation of students after weeks of examination and share the joy and happiness with friends and teachers. The event started with a welcome address by Prof Hwa-yaw Tam, Head of the Department. He highlighted that the Department dedicates to maintain a lifelong relationship with our alumni and is always glad to hear updates from them regarding their job prospects and personal advancement. He took the opportunity to extend the warmest congratulations to our graduates and wish our graduates every success in the future! During the tea reception, prizes and certificates were presented to graduates with Outstanding Final Year Projects and winners in Robot Wars Competition to express our appreciation to their hard work and success. Over 70 graduates and staff members joined this gathering and we all enjoyed this memorable afternoon.  Once again, hearty congratulations to all our graduates and best wishes in their future endeavors!

BBQ Gathering 2016

Date: 10th April 2016   Thank you for participating the BBQ event held on 10th April. The BBQ was held successfully because of your presentations. The BBQ is meant to strengthen the bonding between the current students, teachers and alumni of electrical engineering. With the enormous success of this event, we sincerely believe that we have linked the students, teachers and alumni together as a unit. Thanks to the sponsorship from the department of Electrical Engineering, we notice that there is a climbing trend in the participation of our alumni. The Engineering Club conducted a workshop on “Building an underwater robot”

Date: 2nd April 2016 Venue: EF402   The Engineering Club conducted a workshop on “Building an underwater robot” on 2-April-2016. Being one of the HK SciFest 2016 program , the workshop is intended to elevate the public’s interest in science and technology especially related to underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and at the same the promoting the Department. There were 30 participants with secondary school students attending the workshop together with their teachers as well as parents and their children. After a general introduction, participants began building their ROVs and Engineering Club members were serving as helpers. A group of three 14-year old girls was the first to complete their robot. All participants were having fun and able to test their ROVs. We would like to express our gratitude to the Dr Clifford Choy of School of Design for providing us with the ROV kits that were used in the workshop.

Seminar: Quantization of the SI Base Units and Researches at National Institute of Metrology of China

Speaker: Prof. Tianchu Li Date: 22nd March 2016 Time: 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon Venue: AG710 The quantization evolutions of the SI (International systems of units) time unit "second" and length unit "meter" are introduced. Their realization methods and development trends are overviewed by taking the researches at National Institute of Metrology (NIM) as examples. The discussions on the quantization re-definitions of Ampere (electric current unit), Kelvin (temperature unit) and kilogram (mass unit) and their realization methods, which are currently under active investigations at NIM and other National Measurement institutes worldwide, are briefly introduced.
