Biography

Prof. Zhang received the BSc and MSc degrees from Zhejiang University (ZJU) in 1997 and 2000, respectively, and received his PhD degree from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2003. He started his academic career in ZJU as Lecturer in 2003 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Optical Engineering in 2005. He was a Research Scholar of State University of New-York at Buffalo in 2006–2008 and University of California, San Diego in 2011, respectively. He joined the Department of Electrical Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as Associate Professor in 2012 and has been a Professor at the same department (currently Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering) since 2020.

Prof. Zhang has rich experience in scientific research and has published more than 150 research papers in international conferences and well-known journals such as Nature Communications, Science Bulletin, and Advanced Materials. His research works were featured on the covers of Lab on a Chip and Advanced Optical Materials and were highlighted by the Optical Society of America (OSA) as well as many S&T media such as Science Daily, Laser Focus World, eeNews Europe, Materials Views China, etc.

Prof. Zhang received Outstanding Staff Awards from ZJU’s College of Information Science and Technology in 2005 and ZJU’s Department of Optical Engineering in 2009, respectively. After joining PolyU, he received Merit Award in Research and Scholarly Activities (Individual) 2019/20 from PolyU’s Faculty of Engineering and received Research Grant Achievement Award from PolyU’s Faculty of Engineering in 2020 and 2022, respectively. Prof. Zhang is currently a management committee member of PolyU’s Photonics Research Institute and a member of State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and OPTICA.
