PolyU celebrates the establishment of the Yeung Tsang Wing Yee and Tsang Wing Hing Professorship in Neuropsychology

On 21 October 2019, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) held an appreciation lunch to express its gratitude to Mr Tsang Wing Wah (Picture 1, middle right), Dr Eddie Yeung Shiu Kin (middle left), and members of the Tsang family, for establishing the Yeung Tsang Wing Yee and Tsang Wing Hing Professorship in Neuropsychology. PolyU President Professor Jin-Guang Teng (first from left) and PolyU Foundation Chairman Dr Katherine Ngan (first from right) presented a souvenir to Mr Tsang and Dr Yeung on behalf of the University. The Endowed Professorship is established in memory of the deceased sisters, Madam Yeung Tsang Wing-yee Winnie and Ms Tsang Wing-hing, two of the eight children of the philanthropist, the late Mr Tsang Shiu-tim, in support of the education and research work in the areas of neuroscience and neurological rehabilitation. It is hoped that the work will encourage researchers and students to study and conduct research in those areas for the betterment of people with cognitive impairment. The appointee of the professorship is Professor David Shum, Dean of Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and Chair Professor of Neuropsychology (Picture 2, third from left). The Yeung Tsang Wing Yee and Tsang Wing Hing Professorship in Neuropsychology is the 6th endowed professorship set up at the PolyU’s Faculty of Health and Social Sciences since the launch of the Endowed Professorship Scheme in 2012. Naming ceremony for establishment of PolyU- Innovation Technology (HK) Audio and Speech Signal Processing Joint Laboratory

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) received a generous donation from Innovation Technology Co. Ltd (Innovation) for the establishment of “PolyU - Innovation Technology (HK) Audio and Speech Signal Processing Joint Laboratory”. A naming ceremony was held on 18th October 2019. Officiating the naming ceremony were Dr Peter YUEN Chee-kit, Chairman of Innovation., Dr Katherine Ngan, PolyU Foundation Chairman and Professor Jin-Guang TENG, PolyU President. Innovation has been in close collaboration with PolyU. PolyU is very glad to further join hands with such a robust industry player to set up this Joint Laboratory, sharing the same goal of supporting and promoting education and research in the area of audio and speech signal processing – which is a rapidly developing area. It is the core technology which empowers many information and communication technology devices and services such as smart phones, hearing aids and AI chatbots. The Joint Laboratory will be supported by an excellent team of digital signal processing experts. With many state-of-the-art equipment to be installed, including those donated by Innovation, the laboratory will help students acquire up-to-date professional knowledge and start their career in related industries. This laboratory will conduct pioneering research that leads to the development of new electro-acoustic products and services catering to the needs of society. PolyU celebrates the establishment of the Able Endowed Professorship in Construction Health and Safety

On 16 September, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) held an appreciation lunch to express its gratitude to Able Engineering Holdings Limited for establishing the Able Endowed Professorship in Construction Health and Safety. The appointee of the professorship is Ir Professor Albert P.C. Chan, Head of Department of Building and Real Estate, Associate Director of Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development and Chair Professor of Construction Engineering and Management (first from left). Mr Ngai Chun Hung (third from left), Chairman and Executive Director and Mr Yau Kwok Fai (second from right), Executive Director of Able Engineering Holdings Limited, have previously supported the establishment of two other endowed professorships at the Faculty of Construction and Environment, in support of the education and research in the areas of sustainable structures and materials, as well as smart structures respectively. This new professorship will be of great encouragement and support to the Faculty’s scholars to further excel in academic and research.  The Able Endowed Professorship in Construction Health and Safety is the 4th endowed professorship set up at the PolyU’s Faculty of Construction and Environment since the launch of the Endowed Professorship Scheme in 2012. PolyU receives HK$5 million donation from Tin Ka Ping Foundation

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) received a generous donation of HK$5 million from the Tin Ka Ping Foundation (Foundation), which will be credited to the ‘Tin Ka Ping Education Foundation’ to support Service-learning programmes focusing on Greater China and countries along the One-Belt-One-Road. Today, the Tin Ka Ping Foundation Donation Ceremony at PolyU was officiated by Mr TIN Hing Sin, Chairman of the Foundation, Professor Jin-Guang TENG, PolyU President, Mr TAI Hay Lap, Vice Chairman of the Foundation, Mr TIN Wing Sin and Professor Kenneth YOUNG, Directors of the Foundation as well as Dr Miranda LOU, Executive Vice Chairman of PolyU. Professor TENG expressed his sincere gratitude to the Tin Ka Ping Foundation, with special mention of the late Dr Tin Ka Ping, founder of the Foundation and a role model with talent and virtue. “I am impressed by the great contribution the Foundation has made to the country’s development through its support of education. Over the years, the Foundation has subsidized over 300 schools and institutes in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau,” said Professor TENG. PolyU is the first local university incorporating service-learning as a compulsory subject for the undergraduates. Service-Learning enables young people to develop positive values. Participation in overseas Service-Learning projects also widens students’ global vision and enhances their sense of empathy and social responsibility. Chairman TIN also mentioned that the Foundation first supported PolyU in 2003. With the launch of the government’s matching grants in 2007, the Foundation offered another donation to PolyU and the ‘Tin Ka Ping Education Foundation’ was then established. Chairman TIN stated that the Foundation has supported many meaningful programmes over the years which were very successful, including those initiatives like youth programme, visiting scholar programme, language programme run by Department of Applied Social Sciences, School of Nursing and English Learning Centre. Chairman TIN resonates with the University to live up to its motto ‘To Learn and to Apply, for the Benefit of Mankind’. PolyU is devoted to nurturing critical thinkers, innovative problem solvers and socially responsible global citizens, this aligns with the Foundation’s philosophy of nurturing youngsters with morality and talents. Directors of the Foundation were pleased to have a constructive exchange with management of PolyU, teaching academic and beneficiary project participants at the Ceremony. With the support and blessing of the Foundation, PolyU will continue to provide life-changing learning experiences helping our students open their minds and shape the future.

PolyU and HKIF launch eye care programme to help 200 children

The School of Optometry (SO) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) joins hands with the Hong Kong Innovation Foundation (HKIF) founded by Sino Group, to launch the PolyU-HKIF Children Eye Care Programme to help local children from underprivileged families to contain myopia progression at the optimal age and reduce vision problems caused by myopia in the long run. Sponsored by HKIF, this 2-year eye care programme will benefit 200 children aged 6-12, with 300 degrees or above of short-sightedness, living in Sham Shui Po and Kwun Tong. Participating children will receive a comprehensive eye assesment from PolyU and will be provided with the University’s award-winning Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) Spectacle Lens to control their myopia progression as well as regular follow-up check-ups for two years. The programme was kicked off at a ceremony on 31 Aug 2019 officiated by Dr Miranda Lou, Executive Vice President, PolyU; Professor David Shum, Yeung Tsang Wing Yee and Tsang Wing Hing Professor in Neuropsychology, Chair Professor of Neuropsychology and Dean of Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, PolyU; Professor Carly Lam, Interim Head, School of Optometry, PolyU; Mr Daryl Ng, JP, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group and Chairman of the Hong Kong Innovation Foundation and Mr Andrew Young, Associate Director (Innovation) of Sino Group. Dr Miranda Lou, Executive Vice President of PolyU, said, ”This is a meaningful programme that assists the children in the underprivileged families to receive comprehensive eye care service and control their myopia progression. We are delighted to learn that PolyU contributes our innovation and expertise to make a difference in our society. While serving the community with their professional skills, our students also gain experience in practising what they learned in the classroom through this service-learning model.” Mr Daryl Ng, Chairman of the Hong Kong Innovation Foundation, remarked, ”We share similar values with PolyU, which has a strong and excellent tradition in scientific research. The Group believes that innovation and technology defines our future, it is crucial to the diversified, sustainable development of Hong Kong as well as enhance its competitiveness. ” The programme demonstrates the boundless possibilities of scientific innovation and its importance to our lives and society. In addition to supporting home-grown innovation, HKIF also hopes that this collaboration expands the children’s horizons, opens them up to innovation and technology. Ten-year-old Huang Ho-yan, is a beneficiary of the programme. She was diagnosed with myopia of 150 degrees last year, and it has increased to 300 degrees. Her mother had thought that wearing glasses would lead to a rapid increase of myopia, so at first Ho-yan were told to wear glasses only when necessary, such as in class when she needed to look at the blackboard. However, as Ho-yan’s eyesight continued to deteriorate, her mother then tried to look for myopia control solutions but found such products unaffordable. Ho-yan will soon be provided with myopia control DIMS Spectacle Lens under the programme. Her parents would also remind their book-loving daughter to take a break while reading. Limit will be set for Ho-yan of watching television and using electronic devices as an additional safeguard. DIMS Spectacle Lens, jointly developed by PolyU and Hoya Corporation, have won the Grand Prize, Grand Award and Gold Medal at the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, Switzerland, in April 2018. It is a comfortable and safe product for myopia control. Results of the clinical trials show that children wearing DIMS Spectacle Lens had myopia progression reduced by 59%. More than 20% of the children who were in treatment group of the research did not show any myopia progression at all. In addition to helping the eyesight of children, the programme also aims to expand their horizons in innovation and technology. Participating children will be offered the opportunities to join activities related to innovation and technology, such as guided tours to OC STEM Lab at Olympian City and Sino Inno Lab in Kwun Tong.

PolyU receives donation from Suga International Holdings Limited to support sustainable urban green agriculture

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) received a generous donation from Suga International Holdings Limited (SUGA) for the establishment of Hong Kong’s first research platform focusing on Urban Agriculture. The laboratory has been named as “Suga Research Laboratory for Sustainable Urban Green Agriculture” in recognition of the company’s contribution to the University. Officiating the naming ceremony were Professor the Honourable Sophia CHAN, the Secretary for Food and Health of the HKSAR Government, Dr NG Chi-ho, Chairman and Managing Director of SUGA, and Professor Jin-Guang TENG, PolyU President. The mission of the Laboratory is to develop the next generation of Urban Agriculture model to cultivate high quality and safe fruits and vegetables in a small indoor space, with hydroponics as a focus. Two research directions include the investigation of the optimal correlation between major environmental factors and the growth of hydroponics vegetables, as well as the systematical assessment of food safety risk, harmful chemicals and food-borne bacteria in vegetables grown from hydroponics and traditional farming. Professor Teng expressed sincere gratitude to Dr Ng for supporting PolyU’s sustainable urban green agriculture research. “The Laboratory is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. With the use of innovative technologies, Urban Agriculture contributes to food safety and enables sustainable food production in modern cities. It matches with one of PolyU’s strategic research areas, that is, food safety and technology,” added Professor TENG. In 2011, PolyU established the first university-based Food Safety and Technology Research Centre in Hong Kong and had successfully developed the first Food Hygiene Standard Certification System for local catering establishments, which had then been licensed to three major certification bodies in Hong Kong. At the naming ceremony, Professor Sophia CHAN said the Government has put in a lot of efforts and resources to promote the sustainable development of agriculture in Hong Kong. This includes the setting up of an Agricultural Park to encourage the adoption of modern farming methods and offering funding through the $500 million Sustainable Agricultural Development Fund to foster the research and application of new technologies as well as to encourage farmers upgrade and modernise their equipment. She welcomes the establishment of the Suga Research Laboratory in PolyU to complement the Government’s efforts on this front. Dr NG said, “SUGA has been actively applying new technology in improving food quality and safety, both for the health of human and people’s best friend, pets. I am very delighted to endorse and support this research laboratory, an exemplary cooperation among enterprise, academia and research. I am tremendously eager to see the inventive solutions that will arise from this laboratory, and how they will bring meaningful contributions to the advancement of hydroponic business and pet food business in Hong Kong.” The Suga Research Laboratory for Sustainable Urban Green Agriculture is operated by PolyU’s Food Safety and Technology Research Centre (FSTRC). Dr WONG Ka Hing, Executive Director of FSTRC, shared that the development of indoor hydroponic technology is demand-driven and customer focused to ensure that the products could fulfill the needs of Hong Kong people. Besides food safety and technology for humankind, the Laboratory has an ambition to do more and the next research focus will be on pet food. The Laboratory will also establish a Core Technology Exchange Platform for promoting knowledge transfer in Urban Agriculture and enhancing the competitiveness of the industry. Aspiring to serve as an information hub to make greater contributions in Urban Agriculture development in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area and the Mainland, the Laboratory will help foster a “Healthy Eating” culture and safeguard public health.

PolyU Foundation holds appreciation reception for its members

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) Foundation held two appreciation receptions on 9 May and 22 May 2019 respectively, to express its gratitude to its members for their generous support to the University. Among the guests invited were new and upgraded members in the PolyU Foundation membership categories of Honorary Life Member, Life Member, Senior Member and Ordinary Member. Prof. Philip Chan, PolyU Interim President, warmly welcomed the guests and shared with them PolyU’s accomplishments in education, research and knowledge transfer. He acknowledged members for their ardent support to the University, which enabled PolyU to make further contributions to the betterment of society. Dr Katherine Ngan, Chairman of the PolyU Foundation, expressed her heartfelt thanks to the members for their long-standing support. Besides introducing the objectives of the Foundation, Dr Ngan encouraged members to continue to support PolyU so that the University could secure extra funds for its development through the Eighth Matching Grant Scheme. As a token of thanks, a Certificate of Appreciation was presented to the members by Prof. Chan and Dr Ngan. After the appreciation reception, the members also paid a visit to the House of Innovation to know more about PolyU’s accomplishment in research and development.

Lam Woo Foundation supports the development of Distinguished Social Work Awards

On 29 April, PolyU held an appreciation luncheon to express its gratitude to Lam Woo Foundation for the generous donation to support the development of “Lam Woo Distinguished Social Work Awards”. PolyU Interim President Prof. Philip Chan presented a souvenir to Dr Samuel Lam, Council member of Lam Woo Foundation on behalf of the University and thanked the Foundation for its staunch support to PolyU. Set up by Lam Woo Foundation in 2012 and organised by Peking University-The Hong Kong Polytechnic University China Social Work Research Centre, the “Lam Woo Distinguished Social Work Awards” is the first national social work award jointly organised by universities from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland in recognition of the scholars, students and service units in the mainland with outstanding contributions and performance in the field of social work.

Appreciation Reception for Scholarship and Bursary Donors 2018/19

On 11 April 2019, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) held an appreciation reception at the Alumni Atrium to thank donors who have set up scholarships and/ or bursaries for students in the academic year 2018/19. In 2018/19, PolyU received over HK$43 million from around 360 donors, in the forms of scholarships, bursaries, financial assistance, and subsidies for student activities, benefiting over 2,300 students. Prof. Philip Chan, PolyU Interim President, expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all donors in his welcoming address. Certificates of appreciation were presented to donors who have supported the University’s scholarship/bursary scheme for over 15 years by Prof. Chan and Dr Katherine Ngan Ng Yu-ying, Chairman of the PolyU Foundation. Dr Ngan also appealed all donors to continuously partner with PolyU to nurture more talents with social responsibility and make ever-greater contribution to our society. During the reception, six talented scholarship awardees performed Kazakhstan dance and singing respectively to express their heartiest gratitude to the donors. Two donors, Hong Kong Hotels Association and Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association, which have been supporting the University’s scholarship/ bursary scheme for over two decades, shared with the audience their beliefs and aspiration to support education and PolyU.

Sin Wai Kin Foundation supports the development of Chinese Humanities education

On 28 March, PolyU held an appreciation luncheon to express its gratitude to Sin Wai Kin Foundation for the generous donation to support the development of Chinese Humanities education.
