Multi-factor authentication (MFA) provides extra security protection for accessing online applications or service outside campus.
When connecting to campus network remotely from home or outside HKSAR using GlobalProtect VPN, users will be prompted to enter NetID and NetPassword. The Microsoft Authenticator app on pre-registered smart phone is also required to either approve (push notification verification) or input the 6-digit one time passcode (passcode verification) before access granted.
Microsoft, our service provider of MFA service, will introduce “number matching” for users who select to use push notification as MFA verification method in March 2023. This will protect users from accidentally approving sign-in request initiated by a third party.
How will “number matching” affect services required MFA?
When performing MFA push authentication, you will see a 2-digit number displayed on your PolyU Single-Sign-On browser screen. Please enter this number on the “Microsoft Authenticator” app in order to complete the sign-in process instead of simply pressing “approve” button showing on Authenticator app screen.
To use this feature, the minimum “Microsoft Authenticator” app version for Android is 6.2006.4198 and for iOS version is 6.4.12. You need to update your “Microsoft Authenticator” app if it has not been updated since 2021. To check your installed version / release of Authenticator app, please sign in the Authenticator app and select “Help” option from app menu.
It is the same process as before if you use “Passcode” authentication method (i.e., 6-digit display on your authenticator app). You should input the 6-digit verification code from Authenticator app to PolyU Single-Sign-On screen.
