Audio System at teaching venues with ceiling microphone
In response to the issues encountered by instructors when using audio system at General Teaching rooms (GT) with ceiling microphone in semester 2, mitigating actions have been taken, including:
- fine-tuning the audio pick-up zone of ceiling microphones
- relocating the positions of ceiling speakers to reduce echo
- uplifting teacher audio output volume of ceiling speakers
Classrooms with ceiling microphones will be provided with additional wireless handheld microphones to facilitate student participation in discussions and interactions.
In-class audio will be captured as class recordings via cloud-based Video Conference (VC) sessions on Zoom, Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, or MS Teams running on the built-in teaching PC in Smart Panel.

Classroom with Smart Panel
Classrooms of less than 50 seats equipped with Smart Panels (including embedded teaching PCs) have been connected to an external monitor (alternate screen display), a keyboard, a mouse, and a USB connector on the teaching desk. The Smart Panel has 12 built-in microphones with an 8-meter sound pick-up distance, which are 180-degree angle forward-facing. It also includes a 1080-pixel HD ultra-wide-angle camera for easy class recording.
Using Smart Panel briefing for semester 2 instructors
Two briefing sessions were held on 27-28 March 2023 to demonstrate the use of Smart Panel for face-to-face class teaching delivery, along with class recording via cloud-based VC sessions on Zoom, Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, or MS Teams.
Topics covered:
- Basic on/off operation and call up screen display mode for Smart Panel
- Use of different display modes for preparing teaching materials and presentations
- Use of smart panel built-in camera, mic and embedded PC for class recording using Cloud based VC sessions
- Use of electronic whiteboards for writing / drawing in-class with content captured on class recording
- Connecting teacher bring-in device for video/specific content sharing to smart panel display via Cloud based VC sessions
