Academic Advising

Academic Advising

The Academic Advising System at PolyU “aims to help students make informed and intelligent academic decisions / choices about their study at PolyU that suit their intellectual, professional and personal goals. It is instrumental to promoting student success, and plays a vital role in enhancing students’ holistic development at PolyU” (Learning and Teaching Committee Paper LTC/42/A4).

Students on BBA (Hons) in Management and BBA (Hons) in Marketing programmes will be assigned to an Academic Advisor in MM. The primary role of Academic Advisor is to advise students on their Major study, Secondary Major, and Minor/free elective choices, as well as the General University Requirements (GUR).

It is expected that:

  • Academic advisors keep in contact with their student advisees regularly (e.g. via emails or other means), and need to have at least one face-to-face meeting with them, either individually or in small groups, once in each academic year. Additional meetings might be arranged if deemed appropriate.
  • Academic advisors are expected (1) to advise students on their study plans; (2) to review students’ progress in study for early identification of those with special learning needs; (3) to grasp students’ views on learning/teaching issues; and (4) to review students’ overall academic performance and provide counselling to students who have been put on academic probation and/or attempted dishonesties (e.g. cheating in examination, plagiarism, disciplinary issues, etc.).

Effective academic advising requires an active participation of student advisees in the processes. To enable you to maximize your gain from academic advising, please note your responsibilities in academic advising as follows:

  1. Clarify personal abilities, interests, and goals for academics and life.
  2. Contact and schedule regular appointments with your Departmental Academic Advisor each year as required or when in need of assistance.
  3. Prepare for advising sessions. Understand and review their academic progress before meeting their Academic Advisor. Study the Programme Requirement Document (PRD).
  4. Become knowledgeable and adhere to institutional policies, procedures, and requirements.
  5. Have an open mind and be ready to consider advice given by teachers, Academic Advisors/ Counsellors and other staff.
  6. Read your PolyU e-mails and other important communications from the University and your Academic Advisor.
  7. Access and use eStudent for academic updates, information updating, registration, and other purposes.
  8. Accept final responsibility for all decisions made and your graduation requirements.

Academic Advisors are expected to:

  1. Have a clear understanding of:
    1.         study pathways;
    2.         discipline-specific requirements;
    3.         University policies on undergraduate studies; and
    4.         opportunities and resources within the University.
  1. Communicate effectively, listen to the students and respect their views and choices.
  2. Uphold the core values of Academic Advising (e.g. respect, empathy) within PolyU.
  3. Assist students to identify their academic, career, and personal goals and help them develop plans to achieve these goals.
  4. Assist students to understand their academic performance and areas of strengths.
  5. Assist students to understand the graduation requirements and auditing process.
  6. Keep accurate record about sessions of Academic Advising.
  7. Be available to answer the questions of students through different means.
  8. Make appropriate referrals when necessary.
  9. Strive for excellence in Academic Advising.

Students can find the information on Academic Advisor via eStudent and it is expected that Academic Advisor will meet with students periodically (at least once a year individually or in a group).
