This PDW was led by Sam Garg (SEJ Associate Editor), Peter G. The PDW was part of the International Symposium on Strategic Entrepreneurship, in which Professor Peter G. Klein delivered a keynote speech, entitled “The Judgment-Based Approach: Retrospect and Prospect”, based on his two-decade research collaborations with Professor Nicolai Foss and a few other scholars to develop the “judgment-based view” as a new approach to the study of entrepreneurship. Public Lecture by Prof. Nicolai J. Foss – “Rethinking Managerial Authority and Its Legitimacy: A Self-determination Perspective”

MM will hold a Public Lecture on the topic “Rethinking Managerial Authority and Its Legitimacy: A Self-determination Perspective” on 1 March 2024. Abstract: While managerial authority is absolutely central to much management and organization theory, authority is also highly contested, being challenged on grounds of ethics and efficiency. Moreover, key aspects of managerial authority remain less well understood. This is particularly the case of the microfoundations of authority that relate to legitimacy: why do employees accept to be subject to the order-giving and direction of hierarchical superiors? The talk reviews managerial authority and its legitimacy and develops a novel argument for the legitimacy of authority based on self-determination theory: employees view authority as legitimate when it contributes to their well-being or flourishing.   Date*    : 1 March 2024 (Friday) Time*   : 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. (Public Lecture)          4:00 – 4:30 p.m. (Q&A Session) *Hong Kong Time Venue   : AG710, PolyU Please register through the registration form https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=YPc3j4exgUm4L-Xcb1vPRLiQGU2EnwNOtDVtbUjEEDNUN0FIS00yQ0o5NFNSNzBPQjdEMFFJMTRQRy4u on or before 26 Feb 2024 (Mon).   More Details

Call for Proposals - Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal Paper Development Workshop

The Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal (SEJ), in collaboration with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, will offer a paper development workshop (PDW) in Hong Kong on Thursday & Friday, February 22-23, 2024. The goal of the PDW is to provide junior scholars with developmental feedback on their current research papers in entrepreneurship and innovation and to help them position their manuscripts for possible submission to the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal. Early-career researchers, including both Ph.D. students and junior assistant professors, are particularly encouraged to apply. The workshop will be led by Sam Garg (SEJ Associate Editor), Peter Klein (SEJ Co-Editor) and Matthew Mount (SEJ Associate Editor). We will first discuss general information about publishing in SEJ and how to address the key challenges that editors and reviewers see in the review process. We will then match the participants with SEJ editors and senior faculty members at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to provide authors with developmental feedback aimed at improving their manuscripts. Prospective participants are invited to submit their research proposals (extended abstracts) to Maggie Ma (rongzma@polyu.edu.hk) with the subject “PolyU SEJ PDW” by January 15, 2024. Each participant may submit only one proposal to the PDW. Please include in a single PDF file (1) a cover letter with all authors’ names, e-mails, and affiliations, as well as research question, intended contribution, and the status of the proposal (unpublished and completed manuscript, preliminary findings, etc.); (2) the research proposal (extended abstract only, no more than 5 pages, double-spaced, excluding tables, figures, and references); and (3) the curriculum vitae of the author(s) planning to attend the workshop. Due to a limited number of slots available, applying for the PDW does not guarantee acceptance. Also, acceptance to the PDW does not guarantee acceptance to SEJ. Authors will be notified about the status of their submissions by January 22, 2024. More details about the registration and local arrangements will be provided in the acceptance letter. The PDW will be part of the International Symposium on Strategic Entrepreneurship at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to be held on February 22-23, 2024. Both the PDW and the symposium will be free for participants with accepted research proposals. Coffee, pastries, and lunches will be included as part of the registration. Registered participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs. For questions about the event, please contact Maggie Ma (rongzma@polyu.edu.hk). About the host institution. Public Lecture by Prof. Arun Rai – “Creating Value with Generative AI”

MM will hold a Public Lecture on the topic “Creating Value with Generative AI” on 20 December 2023. Abstract: Generative AI (GenAI) creates human-like content, including text, images, and audio. Through self-learning with vast troves of observational data and with direct experience, it can develop emergent properties to attain goals in complex multi-agent problems. It can also tailor content for specific situations with minimal learning, where one-shot or few-shot learning picks up on particularities of the situation. I will explore how these GenAI characteristics render novel opportunities for organizations to create value through people, products, services, and work systems. I will also address its risks, encompassing deskilling, dominance, hallucinations, intellectual property, reliability, safety, and ethical issues. Lastly, I will discuss the implications of these opportunities and risks for developing and deploying GenAI solutions in organizations, while considering the interplay of an evolving labor market for AI skills and of AI regulation and policies on these development and deployment processes.   Date*    : 20 December 2023 (Wednesday) Time*   : 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. (Public Lecture)          3:30 – 4:00 p.m. (Q&A Session) *Hong Kong Time Venue   : AG710, PolyU Please register through the registration form https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=YPc3j4exgUm4L-Xcb1vPRLiQGU2EnwNOtDVtbUjEEDNUNVQ5VjIxMVdZSEtGOUhBVkozVzYxMk0zNS4u on or before 18 Dec 2023 (Mon).   More Details

Public Lecture by Prof. Kai Chi Sam Yam – “Interacting with AI and Robots as Employees, Customers, Believers, Patients, and Students”

MM will hold a Public Lecture on the topic “Interacting with AI and Robots as Employees, Customers, Believers, Patients, and Students” on 13 December 2023. Abstract: Today, robots and AI help generate creative content, man hotels, and even make hiring decisions in the workplace. But how humans feel about them remains complicated. In this talk, I will synthesize my past and ongoing work in an attempt to answer one question: do humans enjoy interacting with robots and AI? The answer is that it depends — not so much on the types of robots or AI in question, but rather on what contexts we interact with them in. We generally prefer new technologies that serve us rather than those that work alongside us and are especially aversive to them in sacred and moral domains, such as religion and medicine. Technological affinity and cultural differences gen erally explain small variances, whereas generational differences and a lack of exposure explain larger ones. Date*    : 13 December 2023 (Wednesday) Time*   : 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. (Public Lecture)          3:30 – 4:00 p.m. (Q&A Session) *Hong Kong Time Venue   : AG710, PolyU Please register through the registration form https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=YPc3j4exgUm4L-Xcb1vPRLiQGU2EnwNOtDVtbUjEEDNUMEZQQ1pTUTFRTktWWDJMNEdFRVZHV1pWNy4u on or before 11 Dec 2023 (Mon).   More Details
