Public Webinar by Prof. Sea-Jin Chang – “Intra-firm Redeployment of Inventors”

MM will hold a Public Webinar on the topic “Intra-firm Redeployment of Inventors” on 17 June 2022. Abstract: Resource redeployment is the main source of creating competitive and corporate advantages in multibusiness firms. The literature to date is somewhat limited in not directly measuring resources and their actual movement within firms. This study overcomes this limitation by focusing on intra-firm movement of scientific and engineering human resources, i.e., inventors, over time. With patent application data of global semiconductor firms during 2001-2018, we examine which characteristics of inventors and firms prompt or constrain redeployment of inventors, and from where to where they are redeployed. We find evidence that inventor redeployment is driven by less favorable market conditions where technologies from the current invention activities can be potentially used., Further, inventors whose technologies are more fungible and who are less constrained by current intra-firm inventor network and thereby more decomposable and incur less adjustment and coordination costs are more likely to be redeployed.   More Details

Public Webinar by Prof. Mengze Shi – “Paying Consumers for Attention”

MM will hold a Public Webinar on the topic “Paying Consumers for Attention” on 10 June 2022. Abstract: Paying-consumers-for-attention through a decentralized system is intended to deal with the (low) attention quagmire of the current digital advertising system. This paper provides an analytical study of the performance of such a decentralized advertising system which lets consumers choose ad volume and pays consumers for their attention using a cryptocurrency (attention token). Our analysis shows that attention compensation, by reducing consumer’s net attention cost, can motivate high consumer attention and improve the efficiency of ad volume. Moreover, the equilibrium net attention cost decreases with the advertiser’s benefit from matching the products with consumer needs. Thus, paying-consumers-for-attention can better align the interests of consumers and the platform. Our analysis also shows that the net attention cost decreases with consumer’s matching value in a decentralized system, but the result is opposite in a centralized system. Thus, the decentralized system is customer-centric by allowing consumers (not the platform) to reap their attention benefits. Finally, when the attention monitoring technology is imperfect, the performance of the decentralized system is more robust to the noise in monitoring low attention. Overall, our analysis indicates that the emerging decentralized attention compensation systems can be effective in improving the prevalent platform-based digital ad system.   More Details

Public Webinar by Prof. Jan Recker – “From Lock-in to Transformation: How Emerging Technology changes Organizing”

MM will hold a Public Webinar on the topic “From Lock-in to Transformation: How Emerging Technology changes Organizing” on 29 April 2022. Abstract: How do digital technology change the way organizations works? I will draw on ideas from biology, sociology, and general systems theory to articulate a morphogenetic perspective on emerging technology and organizing. This perspective reflects a move from a device-centric or an actor-centric understanding of technology to a path-centric understanding of the patterns of actions afforded by technology-in-use. I will show how performing and patterning of organizing can lead to a wide range of trajectories, from lock-in to transformation, depending on how emerging technology-in-use influences the trajectory. When emerging technologies afford many new actions that can be flexibly recombined, decisive transformative effects are more likely.   More Details
