Summary

Topic

Droplet optofluidics for high-throughput analysis of surfactant/nanoparticles self-organizations

Abstract

Droplet microfluidics enables high-throughput analysis and synthesis of surfactants and nanoparticles. This talk will focus on two applications: active merging of microdroplets using light and the synthesis of monodisperse hollow microspheres (microcapsules) from nanoparticle dispersions in microdroplets. The talk will discuss the crucial role of surfactants in controlling the mesoporosity, organization, and polarization of nanoparticles within the microdroplets and microcapsules.

Biography

Prof. Abdel I. El Abed is an outstanding associate professor of physics at Paris Cité University, where he leads the droplet microfluidics group at the LUMIn laboratory at ENS Paris Saclay. With over 30 years of experience, Prof. El Abed's research focuses on the development and application of droplet microfluidics, optofluidics, and photonics, with a particular emphasis on (bio)sensing, micro-thermometry, plasmonics, and photocatalysis. He received his PhD in Physics from Paris Descartes University in 1992 and later obtained his Habilitation to Direct Research (HDR) in 2005. Prof. El Abed has co-authored more than 50 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and supervised 7 PhD theses related to droplet microfluidics.
