Programme Information

If your Home institution has a valid Student Exchange Agreement with PolyU, you can apply to PolyU as an Incoming Exchange student through nomination by your Home institution.

Global Partners

If your Home institution does not hold an Exchange collaboration with PolyU, you are regard as a Study Abroad student.

You’re required to enroll as full-time student during your Exchange/Study Abroad at PolyU. You are expected to complete a minimum of 9 credits and a maximum of 18 credits per semester. Most PolyU subjects carry 3 credits each (approximately 39 teaching hours), so we recommend taking 3-6 subjects per semester.
You will pick an academic department that offers the academic programme you are following at your Home Institution. Being attached to a Host department will give you priority in registering for subjects within that department. At least 50% of your enrolled subjects must come from the Host department. The rest of study load can be subjects offered by other departments. All registrations are subject to the approval of the respective departments.

Tuition fee is waived for Incoming Exchange students only. Refer to Fees and Expenses below for estimated budget for a semester of stay at PolyU.

How Do I Apply?

Follow the steps below to complete your Exchange/Study Abroad application. Click here for factsheet for details.

Incoming Exchange/Study Abroad students can take subjects from all the departments/schools (check the requirements of each course) if the subjects are approved by your Home institution. Make sure at least 50% of your enrolled subjects come from your Host department.

The medium of teaching at PolyU is English (except for language subjects). You should possess English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80 (internet-based). Incoming Exchange students are not required to submit proof of English proficiency at the time of application. However, you may be asked to provide such a document when needed. We recommend a GPA point of at least 2.7/4.0.

Upon receiving nomination from your Home institution or your self-nomination in the case of Study Abroad, an invitation (a token) will be sent to you via email for making application. You are required to complete the online application with supporting documents uploaded, and dispatch or send by express post to Global Engagement Office (GEO) for our handling. A non-refundable administrative fee of HKD550 (covers VISA fee, courier service and courier of transcript etc.) applies.

You need to pick a PolyU academic unit as your Host department and take at least 50% of Subjects from your Host. The Subject List available at the time you submit your application is for reference only. You will be able to read the finalized Subject List and timetables nearer to the start of the Semester.

Supporting document for upload:

  • Curriculum Vitae in English
  • Copy of identity document
    • Passport (with validity of 6 months after completion of exchange); or
    • Mainland ID Card and Mainland Residence Registration Card (常住人口登記卡副本); or
    • The information page of Taiwan Passport (with validity of 6 months after the completion of the exchange) and Taiwan ID Card and certified copy of Taiwan Census Paper (戶政事務所認證的戶籍謄本); or
    • Macao ID Card and Visit Permit for Residents of Macao SAR to HKSAR; or
    • Hong Kong ID Card
  • VISA application form: ID995A

The Next Step

Successful applicants will receive admission email about six weeks from application deadline. We will guide you on your next steps by email.
Enquiry should be sent to inbound.exchange@polyu.edu.hk by stating your name and Home institution.

Final subject lists will be available in early August (semester 1) and early December (semester 2). Instructions will be sent by email to successful applicants in July and November respectively. Add/drop period is usually scheduled in week 1 and 2 of teaching weeks. It is important that you are flexible with your subject selection. Make sure at least 50% of your enrolled subjects must come from your Host department at PolyU.

Incoming Exchange students enrolled into one of the undergraduate programmes at PolyU for semester-based study are guaranteed accommodation at the University-managed Accommodation (including the Student Halls and Off-campus Housing) for a twin-sharing room. No single room is available. The University reserves the right to assign the accommodation in the Student Halls of Residence or Off-campus Housing as and when necessary and appropriate. Application instructions will be sent to successful applicants in the admission email. Application period is usually in early August and early December. For Incoming Exchange student on clinical placement and non-semester-based study, PolyU accommodation offer is not guaranteed but we will try to accommodate as far as possible.

Study Abroad students are required to arrange their own accommodation in Hong Kong. We do advise students to find their accommodation before arriving in Hong Kong. Some housing information in the market can be found here.

You will be responsible for your own medical and dental costs during your stay in Hong Kong. You are therefore required to take out an appropriate travel and health insurance scheme.

In addition to the University Health Services (UHS) provided by PolyU and the public medical services, PolyU has also arranged a Group Personal Accident Insurance for all PolyU registered students. The insurance only covers bodily injury occurs during activities organized by PolyU. Therefore all exchange students must enroll in an appropriate insurance plan to protect themselves in case of accidents and they will be requested to provide a copy of the Insurance certificate and policy before departure from home. The insurance plan should cover the entire exchange period with the start date and end date matching the student’s flight departure date/return flight arrival date and the following items:

  • Medical expenses (including out-patient, hospital expenses and accident)
  • Personal accident (as the result of any illness, injury, disability or accident)
  • Personal liability covering the legal liability of causing the death of a third party or property damage due to negligence
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains (due to accident/illness/other causes).

If your visa application is successful, we will send you instructions for downloading and printing the eVisa or courier the hard copy entry permit to your home or your Home institution.

According to the condition of stay, Incoming Exchange/Study Abroad students are not allowed to take up any employment or volunteer work, whether paid or unpaid; or establish or join in any business. Please refer to The Hong Kong Immigration Department website for details.
You can arrange your flight as soon as your travel dates are confirmed but it is advisable that payments should only be made after you have received your student visa from us. You should also pay attention to the terms and conditions of your tickets, particularly tickets at special fares.

You are expected to arrive approximately one week prior to the start of the semester and the exact date will be specified in your admission letter. Most exchange students depart after they finish the exam. The exam schedule will be announced in the middle of the semester. You are strongly advised NOT to confirm your return flight until you receive the exam timetable. However, if you have to confirm the return date at the time you purchase the ticket, please schedule your flight at the end of the exam period.
