PolyU 80th Anniversary Celebration Dinner

8 Dec 2017

The PolyU 80th Anniversary Celebration Dinner was successfully held on 7 December 2017 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The dinner was attended by around 2,000 local and overseas honorable guests, alumni, students and friends of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).

Immersed in a joyful birthday song played by the PolyU Orchestra, Guest-of-Honour of the dinner The Hon. Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, joined by The Hon. Paul Chan Mo-po, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR; Mr Carlson Tong, Chairman of University Grants Committee; Mr Chan Tze-ching, PolyU Council Chairman; Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President and other guests, officiated at a lighting ceremony to kick off the dinner.

Addressing the ceremony, PolyU Council Chairman Mr Chan Tze-ching said, “80 years is both a long and a short time span. It is about the lifetime of a person, and yet as an institution, PolyU’s 80-year history – 23 years of which as a university – earns us a label of being a ‘young university’.” He added, “As long as we can get our acts together and capitalize on our strengths, the best of PolyU is yet to come.”

PolyU President Professor Timothy W. Tong said, “PolyU pioneers for the greater good and our ultimate goal is to bring about positive impacts for the local and global community in our education and research endeavours. Moving forward, we will be more connected with different sectors of society to deliver our promise for education and research ‘Opening Minds. Shaping the Future’.”

World-renowned pianist Mr Lang Lang, who has just been conferred PolyU University Fellowship gave a stunning performance in celebration of the University’s anniversary. The audience enjoyed tremendously Mr Lang Lang’s piano recital with Master Peter Leung Chun-shing from the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, followed by a piano and guzheng performance with guzheng master Dr Lunlun Zou.

The dinner was enabled by the generous donation of sponsors. Their contributions also help advance education and research at PolyU. The sponsors are:
