University-Level Roadmap and Goals on Campus Carbon Neutrality

Our Carbon Emissions

PolyU has categorised our emissions in three scopes, namely Scope 1 direct emissions, Scope 2 indirect emissions resulting from energy purchase and consumption as well as Scope 3 indirect emissions associated with the University’s value chain.

A review of the University’s carbon emissions has been undertaken. The University’s Scope 1 emissions include fuel used by emergency generators and fugitive emissions during the use of air conditioning equipment which are owned or controlled by the University. Scope 2 emissions refer to indirect emissions arising from the consumption of electricity and gas purchased from utility companies. Scope 3 emissions refer to the indirect emissions that occur in the value chain, including both upstream and downstream emissions such as procurement, water use, waste generated in operations, business travel, employee commuting, etc.

After evaluating the University’s historical carbon inventory, forecasted grid decarbonisation and other institutional benchmarks, the following ambitious yet pragmatic goals to mitigate climate change is proposed:
