“Fast Fashion”, refers to efficiently produced clothing collections capturing current fashion trend at low cost. However it is known for its adverse impacts on the environment and embedded ethical issues. Under the context of climate change, this practice of the fashion industry is not viable. “Slow Fashion” emerged as the opposite of Fast Fashion with a shift towards a more “sustainable”; “ethical”; “ecological” and “green” process.
Internationally, businesses have joined forces in 2009 forming the “Sustainable Apparel Coalition”, and developed an approach for measuring industry’s sustainability performance – the HIGG Index. In Hong Kong, “refuse, reduce, reuse, redesign, repair, reconstruct, recycle” is seen being practiced by groups such as REDRESS; EARTH.er; FAVES; St James’ Settlement and etc.
Friends of the Earth (HK) is creating a platform for stakeholders to share practices to reduce their carbon footprint. Sustainable consumption among citizens resonates with the flagship initiative of "Trees.COOLiving".
The different business models used globally and locally will be discussed. Could Hong Kong emerge as an innovative & vibrant “Slow Fashion” Centre? Could we generate ethically, environmentally-friendly employment and economy? Could we maintain “prosperity without growth”?
