The urban farming movement is expanding fast on a global scale. It represents an opportunity for improving environmental sustainability, food supply, health conditions, and social integration. PolyU organised its unique urban farming activities on campus from 2015 for the University community. These activities offered many benefits to participants who wanted to experience and learn organic farming practices. It demonstrated the possibilities of growing food crops on campus and enhanced social interaction.

UrbanFarming@Y6 first launched
PolyU introduced the first urban farming workshop for staff and students in November 2015 on the sixth floor of the Lee Shau Kee Building (Block Y).
Putting knowledge into practice
Participants acquired knowledge on organic farming and hands-on experience working at their planter boxes through a series of workshops.

Farming activities on campus welcomed a new milestone in the summer of 2018. A new farm site was opened at the VA Terrace.
Fully-functional upcycled farm site on campus
The VA farm site used wooden crates and screws collected from garbage dumps. It was a successful and extraordinary showcase of upcycling and connected campus farmers closer to the natural environment.
Farming activities received applause
Urban farming activities incited participants to take pleasure in a healthy hobby. It provided an extensive range of social, recreational and health benefits for the participants. It offered them holistic experience to understand their relationship with the environment, and prompted them to reflect upon their attitudes and behaviours.
