Delegated Ethical Approval Process for IGDS MSc Projects
The ethical approval process applies to all WMG students (including Hong Kong students) on taught MSc programmes who are planning to conduct research for the purposes of their dissertation. Students are required to follow the instruction to complete and submit the form [
Click to Download] to your approved project supervisor in conjunction with a draft of your Research Methodology chapter
before any interaction with humans as research participants takes place. Details of the approval process and the associated forms can be found here:-
http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/wmg/overseas/common/ethics/
Steps in the Process
- When students have defined their research methodology, and BEFORE they conduct any data collection, students must fill in the form [Click to Download] and send it to their supervisor. With the form they should include a description of their methodology, GDPR training certificate, draft survey / interview question, a participant information leaflet, and a participant consent form (where needed).
- The supervisor should discuss the methodology with the student and seek clarification where required.
- If the supervisor is happy that:-
- the project only involves secondary research (Section 4.2) or
- the project meets the criteria for Supervisor delegated ethical approval (Section 14.2)
they should sign the form, and send it the IGDS Office.
- The overseas programmes coordinator will then issue the formal ethical approval registration number to the supervisor and the student by email.
- The student should bind the email into their finished dissertation as an Appendix as evidence that they have gone through the ethical approval process.
- If a supervisor feels that the project is NOT suitable for delegated ethical approval they should seek additional advice. In the first instance they should contact Tanya Carey (wmg-ft-projects@warwick.ac.uk).
