Understanding Deepfake Technology:

Deepfake technology employs deep learning algorithms to produce highly realistic images or videos. With just one photo of you found online, it can learn your facial features and generate new content that transfers your face onto another person's body in different scenarios. Attackers are now using this technology in phishing attempts.

Current Case in Hong Kong:

Critical Points to Remember When Receiving an Extortionary Email with a Deepfake Image:

1. Stay Calm and Don’t Panic

  • Extortionary emails with deepfake images are typically empty threats. The attacker has limited options beyond the initial threat. Staying calm is crucial.

2. Do Not Respond or Pay:

  • Responding to these emails only encourages further extortion attempts. The best response is to mark the email as spam and ignore it.

3. Do Not Open Any Link or Attachment:

  • Avoid opening attachments or clicking links in the email, as they may contain malware or direct you to a phishing site.

4. Limit Personal Information Sharing:

  • Be cautious about the amount of personal information you share on social media and other online platforms. The more data available, the more convincing deepfakes can be made.

5. Report Suspicious Emails:

  • If you receive a suspicious email, report it immediately to the IT HelpCentre.
