Summary
In this presentation, we delve into the transformative potential of GeoAI in fostering sustainable urban environments. Through three case studies, we illustrate how GeoAI can enhance our understanding of the built environment’s impact on physical activity, analyze urban noise pollution, and tackle the challenges in high resolution geospatial data. By utilizing large-scale geospatial data and advanced machine learning techniques, GeoAI offers crucial insights for urban planners and policymakers. This presentation underscores the significance of combining objective and subjective measures in environmental analysis and promotes the responsible use of technology to improve public health and social equity. We conclude by highlighting the collective effort needed to leverage GeoAI’s capabilities to create more sustainable urban environments.

Prof. Jue Wang is a health geographer and geographic information scientist, specializing in Geographic Information Science, Health Geography, Social and Behavioral Geography, Big Data, and Spatial Analysis. His substantial contributions have advanced both theoretical understanding and practical applications in these fields. Prof. Wang has led several major Canadian national research projects on GeoAI and sustainable urban environments, funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). His recent research addresses methodological and uncertainty issues in environmental health, develops urban built environment analysis methods using machine learning and geospatial big data, and examines the impacts of the urban built environment on public health and well-being. Additionally, he is an active advocate for advancing research in health geography and spatial optimization. Through his innovative research, Prof. Wang has significantly influenced the fields of health geography and Geographic Information Science.
