On 26 July, Water Supplies Department (WSD) of HKSARG and LSGI host an opening ceremony of Q-Leak Training Centre. The Opening Ceremony was jointly hosted by WSD Director Lo Kwok-Wah Kelvin, Deputy Director Chau Sai-Wai, PolyU Deputy President and Provost Prof. Wong Wing-Tak, and Ming Hing Waterworks CEO Johnson Yuen. The ceremony was witnessed by Prof. Li Xiangdong, Dean of FCE and Prof. Chen Wu, HoD of LSGI and about 50 Advisory Committee on Water Supplies (ACWS) members.

The 24000 sq.ft. centre, designed by Ir Dr. Wallace Lai of LSGI and his team, is the first of its kind in the world for training and developing nondestructive R&D/technology transfer solutions of diagnosing underground water pipe leakage. It will be used for training WSD leak detection specialists, industry practitioners, overseas visitors, and high-school STEM education. In this Centre, Dr. Lai has established more than 80 artificial, hidden and reusable water pipe leakage points for imitating a blind-test scenario. They will be repeatedly used to assess the successful and failure rates of leak detection. LSGI is also in the process of negotiating a MoU with WSD for the future use of the Q-Leak.
