Showcase of Smart Tree Monitoring at the InnoCarnival 2021

Over the years, our professors and researchers have been actively involved in numerous application-oriented research projects. Many of them have been honoured with international acclaim at various invention exhibitions. This year’s, the project of Smart Tree Monitoring by Prof. Charles Wong, Professor of LSGI, was exhibited in PolyU pavilion at InnoCarnival 2021 at Hong Kong Science Park. The pavilion showcases 6 award-winning projects of Geneva Inventions Expo, which cover a wide range of applications, including healthcare, environmental monitoring, smart cities, and automotive safety. Visitors can even experience the interactive game-based learning platform, which was developed by PolyU and received different international educational awards.

PolyU Undergraduate Info Day 2021

Despite the bad weather on 9 Oct, PolyU Undergraduate Info Day 2021 was postponed and successfully held on 10 Oct 2021. LSGI had held 2 admission seminars (One on campus and one online) and a lab tour to introduce our latest undergraduate programmes to potential students and visitors. For 2022-23 entry, scheme-based admission is applied to all PolyU undergraduate programmes. Dr. Yan Wai Yeung and Ir Dr Wallace Lai introduced the "BSc (Hons) Scheme in Spatial Data Science and Smart Cities (JS3130)" with the award programme “BSc (Hons) in Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics” during admission seminars. A new second major in “AI and Data Analytics” is available for LSGI students. Thank you for alumni Mr Sahib Sandhu and Mr Jeffrey Ma coming back and giving sharing on their study at LSGI and career after graduation. Retirement of Sr Professor Esmond Mok

Sr Professor Esmond Mok of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI), who served PolyU for 35 years, retired in September 2021. Sr Prof. Mok was appointed as Dean of Student from 2016 to 2021. Before that, he has been witnessing the development of LSGI for 30 years. He was presented with a souvenir by the Faculty Dean Prof. Xiangdong Li on his last working day. Thank you for Prof. Mok’s long service and contribution to PolyU and LSGI!

Council Member of PolyU Visits LSGI to Stay in Touch

On 9 September 2021, PolyU Council member Ms Julia Man-kwan Lau, who is a registered architect in Hong Kong and has worked in the local real estate industry for nearly three decades, visited the Remote Sensing Laboratory of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI) to keep abreast of the latest developments in the department. She was met by Associate Dean of FCE, Prof. Charles Wong, who introduced some projects to her and her team, including the Jockey Club Smart City Tree Management Project. We were honorable to have Ms Julia Lau visiting the LSGI!

Bentley Institute 2021 Student BIM Challenge – Hong Kong

The Bentley Institute 2021 Student BIM Challenge (Hong Kong) recognizes innovative and technically advanced projects using BIM technology in infrastructure design and management. Two of LSGI students, Christine Wun Ki SUEN and Ann Ka Wing TAI, received the First Runner Up award in Innovation in data capturing for BIM. Their project integrates the modern artworks with the leading-edge technology, which showcases a unique perspective of Art Tech. Their project can be found in the youtube link. LSGI Scholar Introduces Contact Tracing Mobile App on RTHK

On behalf of Prof. Wu Chen, Sr. Prof. Charles Wong Man-sing at the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI) introduced a new contact tracing mobile app developed by LSGI in an RTHK radio 1 programme on 9 Sept 2021. The mobile app is powered with a contact tracing feature that targets inbound travellers when borders reopen. By utilising GPS and Bluetooth, the app can record where the users have visited within the last 14 days.

LSGI Researchers Develop Effective Way for Controlling the Spread of COVID-19 when Borders Reopen

As some countries in the world begin to consider adjusting their pandemic control strategy from “zero COVID” to “living with COVID”, a research study by the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has found that contact tracing is as vital as social distancing measures and vaccination in controlling the spread of COVID-19 when borders reopen. The research team has also developed a mobile app with a contact tracing feature, designed for use by inbound travellers, that would help fight the pandemic in this respect.
