Prof. Teunissen is research-active in various fields of Geodesy and Earth Observation. His current research focusses on the development of theory, models, and algorithms for high-accuracy applications of remote sensing and satellite positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) systems. His contributions range from new geodetic theory (mixed-integer model estimation, quality control and DIA reliability theory) to breakthrough innovations in satellite navigation and geospatial infrastructure disciplines (LAMBDA method, multi-GNSS PPP-RTK and the early characterization of the Chinese BeiDou, the Indian IRNSS, and the Russian GLONASS CDMA system). He has authored numerous journal papers and textbooks, and he is on the Editorial Board of several peer-reviewed journals. With Springer he published the Handbook of GNSS (Teunissen/Montenbrück) and GPS for Geodesy (2nd Ed. Teunissen/Kleusberg), and he published the books Adjustment Theory, Testing Theory, Dynamic Data Processing and Network Quality Control with TU Delft Open Publishing.
Education and Academic Qualifications
He received his BSc (1977), MSc (1980) and PhD (1985) degrees in Mathematical and Physical Geodesy from Delft University of Technology (DUT), the Netherlands.
Professional Qualifications
He is member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Art and Sciences (KNAW) since 2000 and he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2014. He is Fellow of the International Association of Geodesy (1999), the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (2023), the USA Institute of Navigation (2014), the UK Royal Institute of Navigation (2016), and the PIFI-CAS (2021). His scientific contributions have been recognized through various awards, including the Steven Hoogendijk Prize (1985) of the Batavian Society of Experimental Philosophy, the Bomford Prize (1987) of the International Association of Geodesy, the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award (1996) of the German von Humboldt Foundation, the Johannes Kepler Award (2019) of the US Institute of Navigation (https://www.ion.org/awards/2019-Kepler.cfm) , and the Vening-Meinesz Medal (2022) of the European Geophysical Union (https://www.egu.eu/awards-medals/vening-meinesz/2022/peter-j-g-teunissen/).
Academic and Professional Experience
He is a Professor of Geodesy and Earth Observation at Delft University of Technology, Vice-President of the International Association of Geodesy (https://www.iag-aig.org/iag-executive-committee) and founding Editor-in-Chief of IAG’s Journal of Geodesy. His past academic positions include Head of the Delft Earth Observation Institute, DUT Director of Education, Science Director of the Australian Research Centre for Spatial Information and Professor of Satellite Navigation at Curtin University. He was Chair of the Netherlands Geodetic Commission (1993-2008), Member of the Dutch Government’s Advisory Council Review Panels for Science Policy (Aerospace and Geosciences 1996, 1997), Co-chair of the Dutch Earth and Climate Committee RAK (2000-2004), Member of the Science Advisory Board of National Aerospace Laboratory (2005-2008), and National Research School Accreditation Committee, ECOS (2005-2010). His international research has been funded by various fellowships, including the Constantijn and Christiaan Huygens Fellowship (1985-1988) of the Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research, the Tan Chin Tuan Fellowship (2002) of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, the ARC Linkage Professorial Fellowship (2007) and the Federation Fellowship (2009-2015) of the Australian Research Council. He is also a frequent reviewer of Research Proposals for International Research Councils.
