  • help nurturing the junior when they are experienced

I think current students have to:

  • understand clearly the core values of the discipline that they are studying

In the products testing industry, the following qualities are expected from employees and fresh graduates:

  • have basic knowledge and concepts of applied sciences and engineering, as the tests relate to physics, chemistry, biology, electricity, etc.
  • be a good team player; the whole process of product testing is like a project which involves collaboration among the equipment enigneers, operation colleagues and colleagues overseas
  • have communication skills; those who provide customer service and technical consultation have to directly communicate with the clients, explanining the test results and providing professional advice on product design to them
  • have presentation skills; employees sometimes have to present and explain the new regulations on product design to the local and mainland companies or factories
  • be tough; they have to work long hours, especially during the peak seasons; also it is not easy to get promoted unless they accumulate much knowledge and experience in the field

  • have a good attitude; be willing to work with others and be sociable so as to work in an industry which deals with different kinds of people
  • be mentally and physically ready to serve the industry; be ready to work shifts and expect to work on public holidays and at the major festivals
  • have a basic knowledge of the industry, such as the organisation of a hotel, its daily opeartions, etc.
  • be humble and willing to learn at all times; the things learnt at university may be diferent from the real situations; they should learn how to deal with different people and respond on the same issue

Serving the catering and hospitality industry, I believe that employers and fresh graduates should have the following qualities:

  • love the job; be willing to work without expecting any return
  • have logical thinking and problem-solving skills; for example, to accomplish a promotion task, one has to define the objectives clearly, and then think of some strategies to achieve them
  • have people skills in order to communicate with, and handle the numerous customers and staff
  • have leadership skills in order to manage subordinates, treat them fairly to make them feel respected and motivated to work wholeheartedly for the assigned tasks

I advise current students to:

  • do part-time jobs to experience more and widen their exposure to the industry
  • set a clear goal for themselves, then decide their career path accordingly
