High-throughput single-pixel spectrometers for next-generation spectroscopic sensors

 

Abstracts

In this talk, Dr ZHOU will highlight his recent development on combining photonics, computational algorithms, and single-pixel imaging technology to achieve extremely high-throughput field-deployable spectrometers at infrared wavelengths. Such spectrometers could be applied to in-situ chemical/biochemical sensing in a range of applications including biomedical, healthcare, environmental monitoring, industrial inspection etc. Dr ZHOU will further highlight some future directions of this technology including potentially applications in Raman spectroscopy to enhance the detection of weak Raman scattering signal and suppression of autofluorescence, and in Mid IR spectroscopy to enhance the weak Mid IR signal detection for open-path gas sensing and environmental monitoring. 

 

Biography

Dr ZHOU received the B.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in optical engineering from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 1992 and 1997, respectively. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2005 as an assistant professor. And from 2012, he is a tenured associate professor in the same department. His research covers micro-optics, optical MEMS, micro and nano fabrication, microsensors and microactuators, nano photonics, and novel optical imaging and spectroscopy. He is the main inventor of several patents including the MEMS-driven vibratory grating scanner, MEMS-based miniature zoom lens system with autofocus function, miniature MEMS-based adjustable aperture, and high throughput single-pixel spectrometers. The technologies developed in his lab has successfully led to two start-up companies. He is an editor of a book “Optical MEMS, Nanophotonics, and Their Applications” published by Taylor & Francis. He is an associated editor of the International Journal of Optomechatronics and is on editorial board of Scientific Reports and MDPI Actuators. He is also an international steering committee member and technical programme committee member of several international conferences in the field of optical MEMS as well as micro and nano technology.
