Summary

In recent years, the scholarly and practitioner communities have shown increasing interest in innovative approaches to future-making. In an ever-evolving society where predicting the future is difficult, organizations struggle to make decisions about what to implement and where to invest resources. Unpredictable market conditions and geopolitical instability leave organizations ill-equipped to make informed decisions. As a result, mastering future-making skills is more important than ever. In this context, organizations need to develop future thinking capabilities to proactively design strategies to respond to change and remain competitive. Organizations must not only consider existing alternatives but also imagine future possibilities when engaging in the process of developing novel strategies. The act of future-making has been defined as how organizational actors produce and enact the future, and thus a new set of organizational capabilities, practices, and routines is required to construct and give sense to the envisioned future.

All PolyU PhD students and SD staff are welcome.

Prof. Claudio Dell’Era

Professor, Design Thinking for Business, School of Management, Politecnico di Milano

Claudio Dell'Era is Professor of Design Thinking for Business at the School of Management - Politecnico di Milano, where he serves also as Co-Founder of LEADIN'Lab, the Laboratory of LEAdership, Design and INnovation. He is also Director of the Observatories "Design Thinking for Business" and "FUTURES | Sense Making by System Thinking" of the School of Management – Politecnico di Milano. Research activities developed by Claudio Dell'Era are concentrated in the areas of Design Thinking and Design Strategy. He has published more than 100 chapters in edited books and papers published in conference proceedings and leading international journals such as Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Long Range Planning, Technology Forecasting and Social Change, R&D Management, International Journal of Operations & Production Management, Industry & Innovation, Creativity and Innovation Management, Business Horizons, and many others.
