Summary

Obviously, an ordinary person is unlikely to have the qualifications to speak, because we lack a global perspective – a bird’s-eye view; an identity that can grasp important data, and channels that can obtain multiple opinions. Therefore, each of our viewpoints is subjective, perhaps only having the value of becoming data. For Fan, data visualization seems to be a way of giving a personal voice a little credibility, even a way of thinking, helping her understand her situation, express her views, and help her discover certain opportunities and make judgments. Fan wants to share with the audience a clumsy exploration story, which should be helpful for the life and research of a scholar.

Associate Professor, Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University

Fan Xiang is an artist, graphic designer, and educator. Her activities vary from graphic design, and signage design to digital arts. Fan is known for her visualization-based artworks, including the online interactive visualization platform AwardPuzzle, which encourages people to explore the "winning tips" through data from national art competitions, and it triggers public attention on ideology management in visual arts. She is fascinated by synthesizing graphic design and technology as a telescope into unseen reality. Before getting into digital arts, Fan focused on research of signage, and pictogram design in Japan and China. She authored a book, Wayfinding Signage System Design, and a series of research papers. Fan holds two MFAs and a BA degree from China, Japan, and the US. She is currently an Associate Professor at the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. Fan was the winner of the Best in Show award for the Art Papers program at SIGGRAPH 2020 for her paper "Enhanced Family Tree: Evolving Research and Expression". She was also a jury member at SIGGRAPH 2021 and SIGGRAPH Asia 2023. In addition, she is a fellow at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS), Harvard University, and a contributor to the China Biographical Database (CBDB) project.
