Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

Artificial intelligence and big data (AIBD) technologies are experiencing rapid development in society and industry. Combining technologies from computer science and machine learning, this programme is designed to teach students how to understand and create value from AIBD.

The objectives of the programme are listed below:

  • To provide students with knowledge of AIBD from the perspective of research and practical applications, and

  • to meet the increasing market demand for high-quality personnel with expertise in AIBD computing in Hong Kong.

Characteristics

  • The programme focuses on research on and applications of AIBD.

  • It comprises a core set of subjects on AIBD programming and practices, as well as a compulsory dissertation.

Flexible modes of study are available (full-time or part-time).

Recognition & Prospects

Graduates of this programme are expected to possess the necessary knowledge to pursue careers in AIBD application areas, such as smart cities, e-commerce, sales and marketing, banking and other related industries.

Curriculum

Programme Structure

Each subject takes place once a week in the evening over a 13-week semester. Full-time students are enrolled in 5 subjects per semester; part-time students choose 2 or 3 subjects. Some subjects may be offered during the summer to provide students with greater flexibility in designing their own study programme.

Students are required to complete 31 credits for the MSc AIBD. All subjects carry 3 credits, unless otherwise specified. Students must complete the following:

  • AIBD programme core (Programme-Core) subjects: 3 credits
  • Artificial Intelligence core (AI-Core) subjects: 6 credits
  • Big Data Computing core (BD-Core) subjects: 6 credits
  • Compulsory dissertation: 9 credits
  • Electives, BD-Core, AI-Core, and/or Programme-Core subjects: 6 credits
