Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

The main aim of the Actuarial and Investment Science (AIS) specialism is to provide students with a solid foundation of actuarial and investment science. Graduates will become leading professionals in addressing business and societal problems that require identification, quantification, assessment or management of the financial implications of risk.

Characteristics

Our programme provides graduate-level subjects with an emphasis on the advanced methodologies and techniques of actuarial and investment science that are useful to financial and actuarial professionals.

Our focus is on applications and the use of software packages to handle real-world data and solve practical problems.

Recognition & Prospects

In recent years, our graduates in Actuarial and Investment Science specialism have continuously secured internship positions in leading insurance companies and investment banks as actuaries and data analysts in both Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Student Message

In the recent years, the actuarial profession has been ranked among the top 10 job choices in some developed countries based on income, work environment, stress levels and career development. However, there is no such thing as an easy career, and a long journey of study and examinations is necessary to become an actuary.

That is why I chose to study in the MSc in Applied Mathematics for Science and Technology (Actuarial and Investment Science) programme. The specialism not only consolidated my knowledge of actuarial and investment science, but also provided me with a way to approach the preliminary exams of the Society of Actuaries.
