BSE Professor Awarded Gold Medals at The 47th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva

The Department of Building Services Engineering (BSE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) was honoured to announce that Prof. Yang Hongxing of BSE and his teams received two gold medals for their inventions at the 47th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva held from 10 to 14 April 2019. The exhibition was regarded as the most important specialist event of its kind in the world.

BSE Chair Professor/Professor Honoured with President’s Award and Faculty Award

The  Department  of  Building  Services  Engineering  (BSE)  of  The  Hong  Kong  Polytechnic University (PolyU) is delighted to announce that:- (a) In addition to Faculty Awards in Services 2017/2018, Prof. Wang Shengwei is honoured with The President’s Awards for Excellent Performance/Achievement in Services 2017/2018; and (b) Prof. Lu Lin, Vivien, is honoured with Faculty Awards in Research & Scholarly Activities 2017/2018. The award is to recognize Prof. Wang for his dedicated efforts and contributions to reduce the university energy use and to create a more sustainable campus in the last few years. Together with colleagues in CSO, MFO and CDO, he has made serious efforts to in utilizing his research findings to serve the university directly by reducing the energy consumption and cost of the university campus buildings and improving the sustainability of the university. He is involved in many activities related to the development and operation of the campus buildings, including support to the design optimization of new building systems and existing building retrofitting, energy diagnosis and upgrading of existing buildings, cooling-on-demand programme, campus smart energy metering initiative, etc. Prof.  Lu  has  made  a  major  and  lasting  impact  on  building  science  research  and industry, focusing  on  renewable  energy  technologies  in  buildings,  fluid  mechanics  and heat/mass transfer related to building engineering, and green building nanomaterial development. She was recognized in  Clarivate  Analytics’  list  of  Highly  Cited  Researchers  2018 for her exceptional  impact  in  the  above  fields  with  5  published  books/book  chapters  and  150  SCI journal papers. Her prolific research output has contributed significantly to PolyU’s leading ranking in built environment engineering research. Her research findings have been adopted by researchers in over 60 countries and by the local government in its policy guidelines for renewable energy.   Since joining PolyU in 2006, Prof. Lu has successfully secured over 30 research grants (with the total amount of HK$ 20 million) as a Principal Investigator. She has been  the  recipient  of  many  prestigious  awards,  such  as  The  Faculty  Awards  for  Excellent Performance/Achievement  2017/2018  (Research  and  Scholarly  Activities),  the  2017  Hong Kong Green Innovations Awards (HKGIA), the TechConnect 2017 Global Innovation Award (USA), a Special Merit Award (R. Alekseev Award) and a Gold Medal in 2017 from the 44th International Exhibition of Inventions  of Geneva,   the  2014 PolyU FCE  Dean’s  Award  for Outstanding Achievement in Research Funding, Hong Kong Green Building Award 2014, a Silver Medal in 2012 from the 40th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, the 2010 PolyU FCE Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research Funding, etc. BSE would like to  take this  opportunity to congratulate Prof.  Wang  and  Prof. Lu  for  their achievements.

BSE Professors Named Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics for 2018

The  Department  of  Building  Services  Engineering  (BSE)  of  The  Hong  Kong  Polytechnic University (PolyU) is pleased to report that Prof. Hongxing Yang and Prof. Vivien Lin Lu of BSE are in Clarivate Analytics’ List of Highly Cited Researchers 2018 for their exceptional impact in the field of Engineering. The list recognised leading researchers in sciences and social sciences whose academic papers   published  during  2006-2016  were  ranked  in  the  top  1%  in  terms  of  the  total number of citations in one or more fields according to  Clarivate Analytics Essential Science Indicators. BSE Student Awarded CIE Hong Kong Outstanding Student Lighting Project Award 2018

The Department of Building Services Engineering (BSE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is pleased to announce that our student, Mr. WONG Ka Lok, has been awarded “Outstanding Student Lighting Project Award” by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) Hong Kong at the Annual General Dinner. Mr. WONG, graduated with First Class Honours, completed his final-year project under the supervision of Dr. Minchen (Tommy) WEI of BSE of PolyU. Now he works at AECOM Technology Corporation and is also a part-time student of the programme Master of Science in PolyU BSE.   CIE, as the international scientific body as well as the international standardizing body in the field of light and lighting, publishes international standards and technical reports for fundamental knowledge and applications in the fields of light and lighting.   BSE would like to congratulate the achievement of Mr. WONG. We wish him continued success.

Result Announcement - Outstanding BSE Alumni Award 2018

The Outstanding BSE Alumni Award, a biennial event organized by The Department of Building Services Engineering (BSE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), aims at giving recognition to outstanding alumni for their accomplishments in BSE professions and their contributions to the community. The 1st round selection of Outstanding BSE Alumni Award was organized in 2010, and it is now the 5th round selection for biennial Outstanding BSE Alumni Award 2018.   It is our pleasure to announce that Ir Dr Anthony Chi Wah Lo has been awarded as the Outstanding BSE Alumnus of 2018. Ir Dr Lo is a registered professional engineer in the Building Services, Energy, Environmental and Fire disciplines ofthe Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. He started his career in an international consulting firm, Parsons Brinckerhoff (Asia) Limited, where he gained extensive experience in building services, environment system design and project management in various buildings and infrastructural developments. He has special expertise in conducting research and engineering modelling.   Ir Dr Lo is currently Acting Director of Corporate Customer Experience of CLP Power. He is actively involved in formulating business transformation strategies, exploring new and innovative technology to develop value-added services for customers, and promoting energy conservation and renewable energy to combat climate change.   The Department is honourable to recognize him with this award.   The Outstanding BSE Alumni Award Presentation will be held at Departmental Session of 24th Congregation (FCE) and Faculty Prize Presentation Ceremony in the morning of 6November 2018 (Tuesday).   The Department would like to thank all the Selection Panel members for their excellent volunteer work on the challenging selection process. We look forward to the next round selection for biennial Outstanding BSE Alumni Award.  

BSE’s Associate Professor honoured IFMA Educator Award on 5 October 2018

The Department of Building Services Engineering (BSE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is proud to announce that Dr. Joseph Lai, Associate Professor and Programme Leader of Master of Science in Facility Management, has been honoured the Educator Award of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA).   Conferred by the IFMA in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States on 5 October 2018, the Educator Award recognizes excellence in developing curriculum and instructing students in subjects related to facility management at a college, university or institute. According to the Award’s criteria, the recipient has gained prominence in his or her field through activities such as writing and publishing papers, making presentations to professional organizations,mentoring, IFMA student chapter involvement and overall teaching quality.   Founded in 1980, IFMA is the world’s largest and most widely recognized international association for facility management professionals, supporting 24,000 members in more than 100 countries.   Congratulations to Dr. Lai for his achievement and hope Dr. Lai keeps shining in the discipline.  

BSE Assistant Professor Wins the Inaugural Publons ECR Reviewers’ Choice Award

The Department of Building Services Engineering (BSE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is proud to announce that, among the over 600 nominees from countries around the world, Dr Huang Xinyan, Assistant Professor of BSE, has been awarded the inaugural Publons ECR (Early Career Researchers) Reviewers’ Choice Award in recognition of his tremendous efforts and exceptional contribution to scholarly peer review of research papers in maintaining scientific quality. Dr Huang is recognized for being an “active, careful, enthusiastic, constructive, and responsible reviewer”.   Dr Huang has won Publons Peer Review Awards for his field in the past two years, as well as Springer's Jack Watts award in 2015 for the quality, depth, number, and timeliness of his reviews. He was also recognized for the Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing by eight different Elsevier Journals.   Professor You-Lin Xu, Dean of the Faculty of Construction and Environment said, “Dr Huang has demonstrated untiring commitment to peer review that helps uphold the academic credibility of a journal. We are proud of his contributions to the academic research field.”   Dr Huang is deeply honoured to receive the international award. “Peer review is an excellent learning experience as well as a valuable self-reflective process that helps enhance my writing skill for preparing research papers. I am very happy to be able to contribute to the scientific community,” he said.   Dr Huang is a Combustion Scientist and a Fire Protection Engineer. He received his PhD (2016) from Imperial College London and joined PolyU in 2017. He has served as a reviewer for 33 journals and made 185 pre-publication reviews so far.   ECR Reviewers’ Choice Award celebrates early-career researchers’ exceptional advocacy, innovation, or contributions to scholarly peer review, organised by Publons which is a global network of peer reviewers and part of Clarivate Analytics. This is the first year Publons runs the peer-nominated and voted Award, which is designed to recognise an individual who has been influential in the realm of peer review, or has significantly contributed to improving the system. The newly established award is part of Publons’ global Peer Review Awards, the only cross-publisher Awards that endorse the efforts of peer reviewers worldwide. The other five finalists competing for the Award comes from University of Oxford, Imperial College London, University of Texas in Austin, Brno University of Technology and Eindhoven University of Technology.
