Syllabic Structure

 

A syllable in Mandarin usually consists of three parts: an initial, a final, and a tone. The initial is a consonant at the beginning of a syllable, for example,

In some cases, some syllables in Mandarin do not have initial consonants, and the finals are syllables by themselves, as seen below.
