The Society
The International Research Society of Spinal Deformities (IRSSD) was established in 1994 to advance the study and research into Spinal Deformities for the public benefit. The object of the Society is to provide a forum for the presentation and encouragement of research relating to spinal deformity and to disseminate the results of such research.
The Society holds an international meeting every two years at which Members and others with a research or clinical interest in problems affecting the vertebral column (spine) present for discussion scientific papers relating to the Societies objectives, including structure of the spine, etiology or pathogenesis of deformities and the methods of recording and investigating such problems as well as advancing evidence based medical practice in the field. The Society has the aim of achieving excellence in such research and to support and encourage scientific investigations of spinal deformities.
Recent meetings have been held in Japan, Poland, Canada and The Netherlands have attracted presentations which have advanced the knowledge of spinal deformities from biological and biomechanical to clinical applications and concepts.
The creation of the Society in 1994 allowed continuation of the series of meetings first held in 1980 which examined Moire Topography, Surface Topography and 3-Dimensional Spinal Deformity
The Society has the broad remit of considering aetiology and pathogenesis of scoliosis and other spinal deformities. This includes gross body and 3-dimensional topography, imaging in all modalities, microscopic anatomy and the ultrastructure of the spine and nervous system, spinal development and growth before and after birth, neuroscience and the developing field of gait and movement science as well as clinical applications of these disciplines.
Candidates for election as members are those who have attended the biennial conferences of our Society (or its precursor meetings) or individuals who had co-authored presentations based on their original work at our society conferences. Founder Memberships were offered to those who had presented papers at any of the original surface topography meetings.
Membership is open to all scientists and clinical practitioners including but not limited to Orthopedic Surgeons, Physicians, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialists, Bioengineers, Physiotherapists and Orthotists who have a clinical or scientific interest in our principle objectives.
Membership is on a biannual basis, commencing after the conclusion of the meeting of that year. Although the membership is automatic for registered attendees’ of the conference, the Society welcomes applications for membership from anyone who fulfills membership requirements who had co-authored presentations. An application form may be obtained from the Secretariat.
