Academic Staff

Before joining PolyU, Dr Yang Liu was an Associate Professor at Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), Tsinghua University.  She was a Principal Researcher and Research Lead in the AI Department of WeBank, China from 2018 to 2021. Her research interests include machine learning, federated learning, trustworthy AI, statistical mechanics and applications of these technologies in the industry. She received her PhD from Princeton University in 2012 and her Bachelor's degree from Tsinghua University in 2007. She holds more than 30 patents. Her research has been published in leading scientific conferences and journals with over 20,000 citations. She co-authored the book "Federated Learning" - the first monograph on the topic of federated learning. Her research work has been recognized with multiple awards, such as CCF Technology Award, AAAI Innovation Award and IJCAI Innovation Award. She serves as an Associate Editor for ACM TIST since 2021. Her research results have been adopted by leading privacy-preserving projects and are widely applied in real-world applications. She is recognized by MIT Technology Review as the “Privacy-Preserving Computation Tech Innovators China” in 2022.
