COMP scholars won the Best Paper Award at IEEE INFOCOM 2020

15 Jul 2020

We are proud to announce that Dr Jiaxing Shen, Research Assistant Professor, Dr Yanwen Wang, Postdoctoral Fellow, and Dr Yuanqing Zheng, Associate Professor, received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE INFOCOM 2020 with the paper titled “Push the Limit of Acoustic Gesture Recognition”.

This research project aims at developing a contact-free gesture recognition technology by analysing ultrasound echoes reflected from the user’s hand with neural network models. The team proposes to automatically generate training data using data augmentation technique to improve detection accuracy and robustness. The experiment results show that their work can substantially outperform the state-of-the-art in practice. In the future, the team hopes the touch-free gesture recognition technology can be used in kiosks and service robots to reduce the risk of spreading bacteria or virus via touchscreens in public areas (e.g., food ordering kiosks in canteens, queue ticket machines in restaurants, and self-check-in kiosks in airports).

IEEE INFOCOM is a top ranked conference on networking in the research community. It is a major conference venue for researchers to present and exchange significant and innovative contributions and ideas in the field of networking and closely related areas. It covers both theoretical and systems research.
