Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing over Deployed Optical Fiber Cables: Recent Research and Applications

The optical fiber network is the backbone of modern telecommunications infrastructure. There is currently an estimated 5 billion km of deployed fibers worldwide, crisscross the world’s oceans, and forming dense networks around major metropolitan areas. In addition to their intended purpose of facilitating telecommunications, optical fibers can also be used as sensors to monitor the ambient environment. Distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) exploit the scattering mechanisms in glass – Rayleigh, Brilluoin and Raman scattering – that are sensitive to strain and/or temperature. Furthermore, any environmental parameter that can be transduced to strain or temperature can also be sensed by DFOS. DFOS can help facilitate public safety and smarter cities, and can support research in areas such as ocean bottom seismography. DFOS has been around since the 1970s. Recently, this field has been revolutionised by technologies originally developed for telecommunications, including coherent detection, digital signal processing, coding, and spatial/frequency diversity, which can improve performance in terms of measurand resolution, reach, spatial resolution and bandwidth. Combining DFOS with machine learning methods, it is possible to realize complete sensing systems that are compact, low-cost, and can operate in harsh environments. In this talk, I will review Rayleigh-based DFOS methods, and provide insight into recent research results in this field, and examples of DFOS applications over deployed fibers.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT ®) Competition by the Faculty of Engineering

This year, the Research Student Gathering was incorporated with the Three Minute Thesis (3MT ®) Competition by the Faculty of Engineering held on 22nd May, 2023. In the competition, the oral presentations of all presenters were amazing. We really appreciated it. Cash prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners of the Competition (Champion: HK$1,000; First Runner-up: HK$500; Second Runner-up: HK$500; People’s choice Award: HK$500 (by audience ballot)). Congratulations to all the winners. We hope the judges, presenters, and audiences enjoyed the competition as we enjoyed putting it on for you. Thank you all for coming on that day.

2023-04-28 PolyU Taster Programme 5

PolyU Taster Programme

The Department organized a series of activities for the PolyU Taster Programme on 28 April 2023. The programme aims to provide an opportunity for the secondary school students to explore their potential and interest in the engineering disciplines. Dr Lawrence Cheung kick-started the event by introducing the new BEng/BSc Scheme in Information and Artificial Intelligence Engineering. Mr Sunny Cheung, our BEng in EIE graduate and PhD student, shared his learning experience with the participants afterward. Together with Dr Cheung, Dr Ivan Ho delivered a seminar on Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things to talk about the latest technologies in the related fields. The students also had a chance to build a robotic car during the Robotic Workshop, and visited the Electronic Systems and IoT Laboratory to interact with our undergraduate students on their final-year projects and product demonstrations at the end of the event.
