Programme Structure

To be eligible for the award of an MSc, students need to successfully complete 30 credits (i.e. 10 subjects, or 7 subjects plus dissertation). To be eligible for the exit award of a PgD, students need to successfully complete 18 credits (i.e. 6 subjects).

Subjects will be offered predominately in the evenings. Some subjects may be made available in daytime. In general, each subject requires a 3-hour class per week over a 13-week semester.

Programme Syllabi

The size of the standard subject which is the building block of the Scheme is defined in terms of the approximate total time which would need to be spent by an average postgraduate student. The effort required of a student on one subject is equivalent to 4 weeks of full-time study, i.e. a total of about 105 hours (which includes class-contact time). On passing (i.e. obtaining a grade “D” or above) a standard subject, the student earns 3 credits.

Remark: Around 14 of the above subjects will be offered each year.

The dissertation is optional. Students can opt for a 9-credit dissertation. The topic of the dissertation should be pertinent to electronic and information engineering. For students who intend to receive a degree with the Specialism in Internet of Things or the Specialism in Multimedia Signal Processing and Communications, the dissertation should be pertinent to the area of Internet of Things or multimedia signal processing and communications respectively.

The dissertation which carries a weight equivalent to three taught subjects represents around 315 - 345 hours of student effort.  Since students usually continue their jobs while they work on their dissertations, the subject of the dissertation is preferably related to the student’s employment.
