BRE PhD Student Winning the "First Prize" of Best Student Presentation Award of CIB WBC 2019

In the CIB World Building Congress 2019 (WBC 2019) on Constructing Smart Cities held on17-21  June  2019  at  PolyU,  the  full-time  PhD  research  student  (Mr  Abdullahi  Saka  from Nigeria) of the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) won the "First Prize" of the Best  Student  Presentation  Award  (Category:  Smart  Planning,  Design  and  Construction,Smart Environment) organized by the Hong Kong PolyU Student Chapter of CIB (CIBSC).  Mr  Saka  received  an  award  certificate  and  a  cash  cheque  of  HK$  1,000  at  the  Closing Ceremony  held  on  20  June  2019  at  PolyU.  His  winning paper  is  entitled"Adoption  of Building  Information  Modelling  (BIM)  in  Small  and  Medium-Sized  Enterprises  (SMEs)  in Developing  Countries:  A  System  Dynamics  Approach"co-authored  with  his  Chief Supervisor,  Dr  Daniel  Chan,  Associate  Professor  and his  Co-Supervisor,  Dr  Francis  Siu ,Assistant Professor of BRE. The  aim  of  the  competition  was  to  provide  a  platform  for  all  eligible  members  of  CIB Student  Chapters  to  exhibit  their  studies  and  research  outcomes.  Altogether,  18presentations were selected from all applications and there were 3 parallel groups with 6participants in each group. Each group conferred one “First Prize” and one “Second Prize”of the Best Student Presentation Award and thus a total 6 winners across three categories of conference paper themes. •Group 1 - Theme: Smart Buildings and infrastructure, Smart Transportation and Mobility,Smart Utilities and Facilities Management •Group 2 - Theme: Smart People and Living, Smart Service, Smart Governance, Policy and Economy •Group 3 - Theme: Smart Planning, Design and Construction, Smart Environment

BRE Students Winning the HKIS Outstanding Final Year Dissertation Awards for Undergraduate Students (2018)

In the Outstanding Final Year Dissertation Awards for Undergraduate Students (2018) organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS), two alumni of the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) of PolyU were rewarded for their final year dissertations announced on 13 December 2018. A total of 1 full-time student and 1 part-time student from the BSc(Hons) in Surveying programme won 2 Second Awards. Each winner received an award certificate and a prize cheque of HK$1,000 (Second Award) at the HKIS Outstanding Dissertation/Thesis Awards Presentation Ceremony and Cocktail Reception 2018 held on Wednesday, 5 June 2019 at the Royal Plaza Hotel, Mongkok, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

Bravo! Surveying Student Winning the Championship in Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon

 Bravo! Jeffrey Shuen Chun Kit, our year-four surveying student, won the Championship of the Men’s Senior and the Men’s Overall in the 10km Challenge in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon on 17 February (Sunday). The journey to win prizes in this international competitive race is never easy. Since last September, Jeffrey has made every preparation particularly for this race. His hard work and unwavering perseverance were important to realizing his potential and pursuit. Jeffrey, proud of you!

BRE Students’ Hard Work Deserving Wonderful Achievement in ‘The Cornell CUHK Regional Real Estate Competition 2018’ & Invitation to Complete in ‘The 10th Annual Cornell International Real Estate Competition’ in New York

Congratulations!‘Team Estab’ from our six surveying and property management students got the 3rdplacein ‘The Cornell CUHK Regional Real Estate Competition Asia’ in Hong Kong on 8October 2018and received the invitation to compete in ‘The 10thAnnual Cornell International Real Estate Case Competition’ in New York on 12 to 13November 2018. Team Estab was composed of Fiona LEUNG Ka Ki,Jessica SEE Hui Ying and Ricky TSANG Chun Wai of our BSc (Hons)in Surveying Programme as well as Hazel LAI Sze Wing, Winnie SO Ka Wing, Irish LEE Hang Hei of our BSc (Hons)in Property Management Programme.   The purpose of the Cornell CUHK Regional Real Estate Competition Asia was to demonstrate the talent of year-three or final-year undergraduate students and judge their capabilities of approaching the questions. Among the eight leading universities from Asia invited to participate in the Competition, all student teams had to make preparations of their analysis, suggestions and presentations within four days after they were presented with a real case of an Asian real estate transaction.The top three winning teams were invited to compete in the 10th Annual Cornell International Real Estate Case Competition in New York on 12 to 13November 2018.   As the Faculty Advisor of Team Estab, Prof. Eddie Hui says, “It was the first time for our University to join the Competition.We are proud of the students for their hard work and amazing achievement.”Also, Team Estab was very grateful to forward to the Competition in New York.   Hazel shares,"Participating in Cornell International Real Estate Case Competition was a valuable experience for me to apply my knowledge into real case."   Fiona says,"Not only did I find this real estate competition fruitful and practical, but also exceedingly rewarding. The skills I gained from it will benefit me wherever I go! Thanks to BRE for providing this valuable learning opportunity."    Irish adds, "There is no substitute for the direct contribution for Case Competition in shaping your real estate knowledge, problem-solving skill and business sense.I am grateful that BRE provided this amazing learning opportunity for us."   The wonderful achievement came with the team’s countless acts of determination, courage and hard work that helped work through a series of difficulties throughout the two international Competitions. Enriching their international perspectives of the real estate industry made the team more confident and optimistic to take on new challenges ahead than ever before. BRE PhD Students/Graduate Winning Occupational Safety & Health Best Project Scholarship (2017-18)

Congratulations to our PhD students and graduate, Ms Yiu Sze Nga Nicole, Mr. Maxwell Fordjour Antwi-Afariand Dr Zhao Yijie on winning the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Best Project Scholarship for the academic year of 2017/18!   Organized by the Occupational Safety and Health Council (OSHC), the OSH Best Project Scholarship aims to encourage post-secondary students in Hong Kong to better understand the occupational safety and health as well as recognize those students who have successfully demonstrated capabilities of implementing quality applied research related to OSH in their studies.   On 18 January 2019, Nicole, Maxwell,Prof. Albert Chan, Chief Supervisor of Yijie and Dr Daniel Chan, Chief Supervisor of Nicole were most grateful to receive the accolades and the warmest congratulations at the Award Presentation Ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.   Under the supervision of Dr Daniel Chan (Chief Supervisor), Associate Head (Teaching and Learning) of BRE and Prof. Albert Chan (Co-supervisor), Head of BRE, Nicole researched the safety management system in her PhD study. Her remarkable effort on the thesis, entitled ‘An Empirical Investigation of the Current Application and Future Development of the Safety Management System (SMS) in the Hong Kong Construction Industry’, was rewarded with the OSH Best Project Scholarship. Maxwell’s winning research project was entitled ‘Evaluation of Biomechanical Risk Factors for Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders and Fall Injuries among Construction Workers’.Under the supervision of Prof. Heng Li(Chief Supervisor), Dr. Joon Oh Seo (Co-supervisor) and Dr. Arnold Yu Lok Wong (Co-supervisor),Maxwell explored the feasibility of using a wearable insole pressure system.It can serve as an automated risk assessment tool to allow practitioners to take proactive actions for identifying risk factors (e.g.awkward working postures, loss of balance events) that may lead to developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders and non-fatal falls injuries among construction workers.   At the Award Presentation Ceremony, Prof. Albert Chan received the award for his winning graduate, Yijie who was out of town.Her thesis, ‘The Role of Personal Cooling System (PCS) in Combating Body Heat Strain: A Case Study in Hong Kong’ says a lot about her clear understanding of the great importance of occupational safety and health to the industry.   Let’s give a big clap to the winning students and graduate as well as their supervisors! The achievement is a reward for their perseverance and great work, and a big step to their exciting research journey. We wish Nicole, Maxwell and Yijie a new chapter of achievements, vibrancy and joy.

BRE PhD Research Student Winning the HKIE-SSC Student Project Competition 2018 (Doctorate Group)

 The PhD thesis of a part-time PhD research student from the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE), Ms Yiu Sze-Nga, Nicole (姚詩雅), was adjudicated as the Runner-up Award (Doctorate Degree Group) of CIC Award organized by the the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers - Safety Specialist Committee (HKIE-SSC).   The objectives of the Competition are to promote safety engineering and science innovation, as well as to provide an open and competitive platform for engineering students to demonstrate their engineering capabilities and share the learning process in safety regime. The student received an award certificate and a bundle of cash coupons during the HKIE-SSC Annual Dinner 2019 launched on 11 January 2019 (Friday) at the YMCA Hotel, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.   The winning thesis of Ms Yiu was entitled “An Empirical Investigation of the Current Application and Future Development of the Safety Management System (SMS) in the Hong Kong Construction Industry”. The winner was supervised by her Chief Supervisor, Cr Dr Daniel W.M. Chan (陳煒明博士營造師), Associate Professor and Associate Head (Teaching and Learning) of BRE, together with her Co-Supervisor, Ir Professor Albert P.C. Chan (陳炳泉教授工程師), Chair Professor and Head of BRE.

BRE Research Students Winning CIOB(HK) Outstanding Paper Awards 2018

The research papers submitted by our four PhD research students to the CIOB(HK) Outstanding Paper Awards 2018 in late July 2018 were adjudicated as the Gold Award and another 3 Commendation Awards (Category: Research Postgraduate Students) out of 6 submissions from the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) of PolyU. Heartfelt congratulations to those students and their respective PhD supervisors for winning these prestigious awards. Each winner received an Award Certificate and a Prize Cheque from the Guest of Honour, Mr Michael Wong Wai-lun (黃偉綸), JP, Secretary for Development (發展局局長) of the Hong Kong SAR Government, during the CIOB(HK) 45th Anniversary Dinner 2018 held on Friday, 21 September 2018 at the New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel, Tsim Sha Tsim, Kowloon, Hong Kong.   The primary aims of the CIOB(HK) Outstanding Paper Awards 2018 are to promote the excellence in construction management, and to inspire students to explore and share smart construction approaches with focus on the theme “Smart Construction
Collaborate Excellence” to advance development in the construction industry.
