Service-Learning

Service-Learning (SL) is a core part of PolyU’s undergraduate curriculum which nurtures students’ social responsibility by integrating academic study with meaningful community service. The Department is in full support for this and offers different service-learning subjects/projects for students. Students can apply what they have learned at university to serve the community, reflect and develop themselves as responsible citizens, and bring about significant benefits to the disadvantaged groups.

Subjects offered by the Department of Computing

1. Technology Beyond Borders: Service-Learning across Cultural, Ethnic and Community Lines (COMP2S01 / COMP2S01S)

With the goal of raising students’ awareness of information/digital divide, students who enrol will

have the chance to travel to and deliver service in locations such as Mainland China, South Africa, Tanzania, Vietnam, and the Philippines,
meet and interact with the local communities and learn about other cultures,
transfer their skills to local youths and children,
grasp the theories and practices around latest digital trends such as AI, object recognition, and machine learning,
acquire the skills to design and build AI object recognition devices, and
work in teams to apply what they have learned to bring about positive initiatives to help the disadvantaged communities, e.g., the visually impaired.

Target students: This is a GUR subject and is open for all
Pre-requisites: Nil. We welcome students of all disciplines
Programme fee: Programme fee varies depending on locations and ranges from HK$2,000 to $5,000
Project schedule: Lectures and related activities will be conducted in Semester 1, and service projects will be completed during winter break

2. Socially Responsible Global Leadership in a Digital World (COMP3S02)

Aiming to nurture students’ global leadership and cultural sensitivity in the context of cross-disciplinary green engineering, students who enrol will

have the chance to travel to and deliver service in Rwanda and Tanzania,
meet and interact with students from the local schools,
learn about concepts and principles of green engineering and sustainable development,
acquire the skills to design and construct simple solar energy systems, and
apply appropriate technology into the service projects, develop green energy solutions for families in remote villages and wire up the families’ homes with basic electrical appliances.

Target students: This is a GUR subject and is open for all
Pre-requisites: Nil. We welcome students of all disciplines
Programme fee: Up to HK$5,000
Project schedule: Lectures and lab activities will be conducted in Semester 2, and service projects will be completed in the summer term
