PolyU ranked 6th in the subject area of ‘Economics and Business’ in the National Taiwan University (NTU) Rankings 2024, making it the highest ranked institution globally outside the US.

The NTU Rankings, also known as the ‘Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities’, have been published annually since 2007. In addition to overall rankings, they evaluate 500 top universities across six knowledge fields and 27 selected subject areas, of which ‘Economics and Business’ is one.

The NTU rankings focus on scientific paper performance, emphasising current research output as measured by quantitative data from the Science Citation Index (SCI) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). Universities are assessed by their research productivity, research impact, and research excellence (e.g. h-index) over the past 11 years, with a special emphasis on the most recent one to two years.

Ten members of PolyU Business School (PBS) are among the world’s top 100,000 scientists by citation (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in their disciplines. Eight members among the ten are current PBS members, five members are from the Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies, and three members are from the Department of Management and Marketing. Ir Prof. T.C. Edwin Cheng, Prof. Eric W.T. Ngai, Prof. Michael Harris Bond, Prof. Kee-hung Mike Lai, and Prof. Shuaian Hans Wang have been listed as the world’s top 2% for five consecutive years. Tracking millions of scientists worldwide, the study has identified about 217,100 scientists across 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields, among whom 232 are PolyU academics.

The database contains the career-long data based on 1 August 2024 snapshot from Scopus, updated to end of citation year 2023.

PolyU has achieved the top position globally in the field of Business and Management across all disciplines over the five-year evaluation period 2017 to 2021, according to the recently published ScholarGPS® data for 2022. This ranking places PolyU ahead of renowned institutions such as Harvard University (14th), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (17th), and Stanford University (31st).

The ScholarGPS® rankings of academic institutions are based on the number and quality of scholars who significantly contribute to an institution’s scholarly reputation. The institutional ranking considers the number of active scholars—those who published at least once between 2017 and 2021—who are exceptionally productive and have produced high-impact work, as measured by citation counts and the h-index.

US-based ScholarGPS® maintains a fully indiced compilation of metadata corresponding to over 200 million archival publications (including journal papers, books, book chapters, conference papers, and patents) from around the world. It also tracks a database of over 30 million academic, industrial, and governmental scholars from 55,000 institutions and 15,000 academic institutions in more than 200 countries. ScholarGPS® categorises scholarly activities into 14 fields, such as Medicine, Engineering and Computer Science, Law, and Arts and Humanities; along with 177 disciplines, such as Surgery, Mechanical Engineering, and History.

Dr Xiaomeng Guo from the Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies has been awarded the 2024 PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award (YIRA). The YIRA recognises young faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in addressing global challenges through their innovative research. A rigorous selection process involving multiple rounds of review identified Dr Guo as one of six exceptional individuals chosen as this year's YIRA awardees. Her research proposal displayed outstanding originality and innovation.

As a recipient of the YIRA, Dr Guo will receive research funding support of HK$500,000 and a personal cash prize of HK$20,000. This support aims to encourage her continued pursuit of impactful research.

In 2023, PolyU Business School took the lead position in the number of papers published by Chinese universities in management journals covered by the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). The total number of published papers reached 240, demonstrating the school’s continued contribution to the field of management research. Only The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences surpassed the milestone of 200 published papers in 2023.

The figure of 240 was arrived at via a comprehensive statistical analysis conducted on 5,691 papers in the field of management research from universities in China. The study used the widely recognised Web of Science database, focused on SSCI-covered journals in the fields of business and management, and was limited to papers authored by Chinese scholars (without considering author order).

PolyU has achieved significant recognition in the field of Business and Management. According to Research.com, it proudly holds the 9th position globally among institutions with the highest number of leading business and management scholars. Notably, PolyU stands out as the only non-American university prominently featured alongside prestigious institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University, Harvard University, and MIT.

In the specific field of Business and Management, PolyU is ranked 5th among the best universities worldwide in 2024. It also holds the top spot in university rankings for China. These achievements are supported by impressive statistics, including a total D-index score of 821 and a mean h-index score of 58.64. With the contributions of 14 renowned scholars, PolyU has amassed a substantial 3,677 publications, exemplifying its significant research impact in the field of Business and Management.

Prominent members of the PolyU Business School have contributed significantly to the institution’s rankings. Leading the way is Faculty Dean, Ir Professor T.C. Edwin Cheng, who is ranked 24th globally and 2nd in China. Other distinguished Faculty scholars include Professor Mike Kee-hung Lai (ranked 97th globally and 5th in China), Professor Eric Wai-ting Ngai (106th globally and 6th in China), and Professor Andy C.L. Yeung (1,176th globally and 42nd in China).

PolyU’s success extends beyond Business and Management. Notably, Professor Michael Bond is recognised for his contributions in Psychology (465th globally and 1st in China), while Professor K.C. John Wei makes a notable appearance in the Economics and Finance rankings (1,472nd globally and 32nd in China).

The rankings are derived from a comprehensive analysis conducted on 21 November 2023, which involved 166,880 researcher profiles sourced from various bibliometric data sources, including OpenAlex and Crossref. The position of an institution in the rankings is determined by the sum of the D-indexes (Discipline h-index) of all ranked scientists affiliated with the institution. In the specific field of Business and Management, the analysis included 8,531 profiles and scientists from 588 institutions and affiliations.

Overall, PolyU’s impressive rankings and the presence of its scholars among the leading experts in their respective disciplines illustrate the University’s strong academic standing and significant contributions to the global knowledge base in Business and Management, Psychology, Economics, and Finance. These achievements underscore PolyU’s commitment to excellence and its impact on the advancement of knowledge in various fields.

The UTD Top 100 Worldwide Business School Rankings Based on Research Contributions (All Journals), published by UT Dallas (UTD), has ranked PBS 41st for the period from 2019 to 2023. This marks a significant rise from our position of 52nd in the previous five-year period.

Focusing on 2023 alone, PBS stood 11th in the world and was the second-highest ranked among all non-US business schools. In the field of Production and Operations Management, PBS was ranked 5th in the world—preceded only by four US universities—and was the top-ranked institution outside the US during the review period (based on the four premium journals in the field: Journal of Operations Management, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Operations Research, and Production and Operations Management).

PolyU Business School (PBS) tops the worldwide list in Supply Chain Management, and ranks 1st in Asia in Operations Research, Marketing, Management Information Systems, and Advertising according to EduRank.org.

EduRank.org is an independent ranking platform that evaluates 14,134 universities from 183 countries based on a metric-driven approach. Leveraging the world’s largest scholarly papers database with 98,302,198 scientific publications and 2,149,512,106 citations, it assesses universities across 246 research topics.

A case series developed by the Faculty of Business Case Consortium (FBCC) has won first prize in the 2023 Global Contest for the Best China-focused Cases case writing competition hosted by the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS).

The case series, titled King’s Flair International: Managing Supplier’s Crisis in Virtual Manufacturing, was one of 16 prize-winning submissions from 303 entries. Co-authored by FBCC Director Dr Justin Law, Dr Anthony Pang and Dr Johnny Wan from the Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies, Dr Alex Wong from the Department of Management and Marketing, and Prof. Shimin Chen of CEIBS, the case series has been accepted into the CEIBS global platform of China-focused case studies at ChinaCases.org.

The contest identifies and promotes teaching cases with a focus on the Chinese business context from a global perspective. It rewards cases presented with high-quality, in-depth teaching notes that incorporate theoretical analyses and best practices.

Dr. Zhao Hui from the Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies has been selected as one of 2024’s Top Ten Outstanding Women in the Shipping Industry of China (中国航运界十大杰出女性) by Beyond Shipping (航运界), a platform that provides shipping information, data, and consulting services. This recognition highlights Dr Zhao's contributions and achievements in her field. The selection process considered factors including field of work, industry contribution, and social influence among female workers in the shipping industry in China.

Women are increasingly finding opportunities in a variety of professions, including the shipping industry. Dr Zhao's inclusion in this prestigious list showcases the wisdom and strength that women bring to the field. This recognition coincided with International Women's Day, emphasising the importance of celebrating the accomplishments of women in different industries.

Dr Katherine Feng from the Department of Management and Marketing received the Early Career Award from the Association for Information Systems (AIS) in late 2023. AIS is the premier professional association for individuals and organisations that lead the research, teaching, practice, and study of information systems, with members from approximately 100 countries. The globally-recognised Early Career Award celebrates individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of information systems in the early stages of their careers. Every year, the award is presented to between six and eight winners worldwide.
