PolyU Science Researchers received the PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award (YIRA) 2024

Our warmest congratulations to Dr Tian Tian from the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology and Dr Chen Jiewei from the Department of Applied Physics for being honoured with the PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award 2024! Dr Tian and Dr Chen have made significant strides in their respective fields with research focusing on the " Design and development of novel nano-porous materials with enhanced hydrogen storage and delivery capacity" and "Novel computing devices for low-power artificial intelligence of things". This prestigious award is a testament to their exceptional research performance and their substantial contributions to the advancement of technology. Congratulations to Dr Tian and Dr Chen on this remarkable achievement!

PolyU Science wins prestigious awards at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

We are thrilled to share that our Innovations won six prestigious awards at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, securing 4 Gold Medals,1 Silver Medal, and 1 Bronze Medal. These significant, award-winning innovations are a testament to our commitment to tackling challenges in the areas of the environment, health, and renewable energy. The accolades were awarded for a range of groundbreaking technologies, including microbial contamination and pollutants on-site detection device, 3D Bone Scaffolds for enhancing bone regeneration, an innovative vitamin D supplement, novel peptidomimetics aimed at cancer treatment, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) hat that limit dementia progression, and flexible perovskite solar modules. Prof. Yang Tong awarded the Kuok Group Endowed Professorship in Mathematical Science

Faculty extends our warmest congratulations to Prof. Yang Tong, Chair Professor of Mathematical Science from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Director of the Research Centre for Nonlinear Analysis, on the prestigious recognition of being awarded the Kuok Group Endowed Professorship in Mathematical Science. The Endowed Professorship stands as a testament to the remarkable achievements of outstanding scholars at PolyU, honoring their substantial contributions to academia and research. Through the generous support of donors, the Endowed Professors are provided with additional resources, empowering them to excel even further in their research and educational endeavors. Professor Yang Tong joined the Department of Applied Mathematics at PolyU in 2022. He has been working in the fields of partial differential equations and kinetic theory. He served as an Editor-in-Chief of Analysis and Applications from 2013 to 2017, and is one of the founding Editors-in-Chief of Kinetic and Related Models launched in 2008. He also serves on several international journals, including the Editorial Advisory Board of London Mathematical Society: Bulletin, Journal, and the SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis. Professor Yang has been actively contributing to the research and scientific development in mainland China. He is an Honorary Professor, Visiting Chair Professor and Guest Professor of several universities in mainland China. He was elected to be a Foreign Member of the European Academy of Sciences and a member of The World Academy of Sciences in 2018 and 2021, respectively, a Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea in 2022, and a member of The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences in 2021. The awards and distinctions that he has received include the Senior Research Fellow by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2020, the 2nd class State Natural Science Award of China in 2012, the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship in 2011, the Changjiang Chair Professorship by the Ministry of Education of China in 2005, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2004, and the Morningside Silver Medal of Mathematics in the first ICCM in 1998.

Dr James Fang is named one of the six 2024 Pew Marine Fellows worldwide

Congratulations to Dr James Kar-Hei Fang, Associate Professor of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition (FSN), on being selected as one of the six global recipients for the 2024 Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation. Dr Fang is the sole recipient from the entire East Asia region this year. The Pew Marine Fellows are selected by an international expert committee of marine science through a rigorous nomination and review process. Each recipient of the Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation is granted US$150,000 over three years to pursue a research project dedicated to marine conservation. Dr Fang’s research focuses on restoring pearl oyster reefs to promote marine environmental health, biodiversity and seafood sustainability in Hong Kong.

Haos Research in Nature Communications

PolyU Science Research on Ferroelectricity was published in Nature Communications

The research conducted by Prof. Hao Jianhua, Chair Professor of Materials Physics and Devices in the Department of Applied Physics, and Weng Fu Io, a research student from his group, was published in Nature Communications. The title of the research is "Direct Observation of Intrinsic Room-Temperature Ferroelectricity in 2D Layered CuCrP₂S₆". Their research studies the robust out-of-plane ferroelectricity in two-dimensional layered CuCrP₂S₆ at room temperature down to 2.6 nm, which is a potential candidate for realizing low-dimensional multiferroicity. Throughout this study, the origin of the robust ferroelectric behaviors at atomic perspective is revealed. Nature Communications is one of the world’s top journals that publishes high-quality research articles across various disciplines in the natural sciences. Dr Kathy Leng receives Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Award 2023

Dr Kathy K. Leng, Assistant Professor of the Department of Applied Physics, has been honoured at the “Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Awards 2023” in recognition of her outstanding achievements in material physics. She’s awarded a funding of HK$5 million for research expenses. Dr Leng is currently a tenure-track Assistant Professor and Presidential Young Scholar at PolyU. Her research focuses on hybrid organic-inorganic materials that can be made as thin as graphene and she is enthusiastic about the promise such materials show in smart devices and spintronics.
