Summary
This symposium explores the interplay between expansive regional strategies (megaregions) and large-scale urban developments (megaprojects). The link between these two phenomena has become the core of urbanization in Greater China, with lessons to be learned for sustainable development around the world. The symposium touches on values, concepts, and paradigms of urbanization, connecting the disciplines of urban design, spatial planning, strategic foresight, and urban economics. Key questions are:
- How can theoretical and conceptual frameworks for megaregionalization inform better spatial planning and design strategies?
- How can practitioners use innovative methods for large-scale urban development in their daily work?
- How can research on megaprojects and megaregions capture the tacit knowledge of those working in practice (consultants, planners, developers, …)?
Most importantly, the symposium brings together academics and practitioners: in quick fireside chats, renowned academics are paired up with leading practitioners from the region to discuss specific questions within the megaregion-megaprojects interplay. The event is organised and moderated by Henry Endemann, who will defend his PhD on this very topic on the day before the symposium.
