WIE General

Different departments have different WIE requirements. You should consult your department’s WIE Coordinator about the specific WIE requirements of your programme. And you should always seek your department’s approval before you accept any internship offer.

Students may check out the job opportunities on the GEO website and PolyU Job Board.

Insurance Coverage

The University has in place a Group Personal Accident insurance (GPA) policy covering students taking on internship within or outside Hong Kong. See HERE for details.

The GPA policy offers protection for damages and injuries as a result of accidents, and hence will only cover medical expenses incurred by reported accidents during a placement. If you are taking on an internship in Hong Kong, you should approach PolyU's University Health Service for medical treatment regarding general health issues.

All University’s students travelling abroad for non-local WIE placements that commence on or after 22 August 2016 are covered by the University’s Group Travel Insurance. The maximum duration of a trip is 365 days for student internship programmes. See HERE for the coverage.

Students should be aware that a WIE internship does not necessarily form an employer-employee relationship with the placement organisation. This also means that students, in most cases, will not be entitled to the organisation’s employees’ compensation policy such as medical benefits/insurance/MPF unless prior agreement has been reached with the organisation before the commencement of the internship.

WIE Transcript

  • No. WIE Transcripts will only be provided to you after your graduation status has been confirmed.
  • You can always list your placement records as work experience in your CV for job applications, and provide the official documents (e.g. your WIE Transcript) to prospective employers when you have secured your graduation status.

For all internships or part-time employment, it is always a good practice to request for a reference letter from the placement organisation before your last day of work. The reference letter can serve as a testimonial in recognition of your performance and dedication during the placement or part-time employment. If you have not done so, we suggest that you write to your previous placement organisation and make a request.
