ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Three SHTM faculty members recently received awards for excellent performance in their respective fields.
  • Ms Loretta Pang received an SHTM Teaching Excellence Award for her proactive and student-centred philosophy using a wide range of active learning methodologies.
  • Dr Karin Weber, who has published 29 refereed papers in a variety of prestigious international journals, received an SHTM Research Excellence Award.
  • Dr Barry Mak received an SHTM Service Excellence Award for his dedicated service to professional bodies and his active participation in various fields, which has enhanced the image of the SHTM in a positive manner.

Four SHTM students, Mr Tommy Gu, Mr Kitsun Lau, Ms Joyce Ng and Ms Carol Zhang, under the guidance of Dr Ada Lo and Dr Qu Xiao, participated in the student challenge competition at the 5th Global Spa Summit 2011 held in Bali on 15-18 May. The project involved planning, designing, marketing and making financial projections for a spa. The students won 1st Prize with their innovative mobile service spa called "Yi Spa on the go", which targeted busy working people in large cities.

Mr Jimmy Kong, a Year-Two student in the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Hotel Management programme, was honoured with a 2010-2011 Outstanding Service Award for Tertiary Students. The Outstanding Service Awards for Tertiary Students is a joint university award scheme established in 1991 with the aim of encouraging students to develop leadership skills and a life-long commitment to the provision of community service.

Dr John Ap and Ms Gloria Chan, a research student in the Master of Philosophy in Hotel and Tourism Management programme, won two of the seven Best Paper Awards at the Joint Symposium – 7th Biennial Symposium of Consumer Psychology of Tourism, Hospitality, and Leisure, and the 2nd International Symposium on Sustainable Tourism Management held in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 24-27 May 2011. Dr Ap's paper was entitled "Villagers' Perceptions of Tourism Development in the Kaiping Diaolous (Watchtower Houses), China". The topic of Ms Chan's paper was "Understanding Climate Change, Carbon-offsetting and their Impacts on Travel Behaviour".

Ms Fiona Hu, a 2010 Bachelor of Science graduate, was the recipient of the 2010/11 J. Desmond Slattery Undergraduate Student Award for her thesis entitled "The Influence of Culture on the Perceived Attractiveness of Hotel Loyalty Programmes: Chinese and Japanese Customers" from the Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA). Ms Karen Xie, a recent graduate of the Master of Philosophy in Hotel and Tourism Management programme, was the recipient of the TTRA 2010/11 Travel Research Grant. Ms Gloria Chan, a research student in the same programme, won the TTRA 2010/11 Boeing Masters Student Research Award. The recipients were invited to attend the 2011 TTRA Annual Conference in Ontario, Canada on 19-21 June to receive their awards.

Ms Chiu Yu-ting, Kathy and Ms Tsang Wai-mai, Lydia, Year-Two students in the Higher Diploma in Hotel Management programme, won the Third Prize-Bronze in the Seoul MICE Youth Challenge at the Korea MICE Expo 2011 held in Seoul on 28-30 June.
