RIAIoT Leading Member shares insights on GBA talent flow to innovate national strategic development

At the Taihu Talent Summit 2023, Prof. GUO Song, Leading Member of the Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Things (RIAIoT), shared his insights on how Hong Kong’s potential to contribute to national development by participating in the construction of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Taihu Bay joint talent hub, technological innovation and industry-academia-research collaboration. Prof. Guo emphasised the significance of the strategic talents pool construction to meet critical national and strategic requirements, dedicating to fundamental research and innovations.  He also highlighted the importance of developing core technologies in the fields of 5G/6G networks, edge-cloud computing, AI infrastructure and ecology, as well as building high-level professionals and innovative teams.

PolyU and China Harbour establish joint research centre to promote land development research

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and China Harbour Engineering Co. Ltd (CHEC) have collaborated to establish the China Harbour–PolyU Joint Research Centre for Land Development (JRC) to promote sustainable land development, develop a green, low-carbon economy and improve the urban living environment. The Centre inauguration ceremony was held on the PolyU campus on 17 May. PAIR Public Seminar successfully held on 21 April 2023

Prof. YANG Weimin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology, delivered the PAIR Public Seminar titled “Green Chemical Engineering and Zeolite Catalysis” in hybrid mode on 21 April 2023. The seminar attracted over 120 participants joining onsite and online from over 10 countries and regions in Asia, Europe and North America. It was also broadcasted live on multiple social media platforms, including Bilibili and Weibo, and viewed by an online audience of over 11,000 in total. The seminar was kick-started by Prof. WANG Zuankai, Associate Vice President (Research and Innovation), with a welcome speech and a speaker introduction. Prof. Yang introduced his team’s research progress in the field of green chemical engineering, including the development and practice of green chemical technology based on zeolite catalytic materials and the application of novel zeolite catalytic materials, and shared his views on the future trends in the industry.  A question-and-answer session moderated by Prof. Edman TSANG, Visiting Professor in the Department of Applied Physics, followed. Prof. CAO Jiannong, Director of the Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Things (RIAIoT), shared with Ta Kung Pao about his insights on formulating a blueprint for the development of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance Hong Kong’s core competitiveness. Prof. Cao indicated that the application of AI will greatly drive Industry 4.0 and digital transformation, and AI-enabled data analytics can help improve production efficiency and quality. PAIR holds first and largest international conference on interdisciplinary research

The PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) Conference 2023 concluded at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) on 11 May 2023. The four-day hybrid event attracted over 2,500 participants joining on site and online from 40 countries and regions. The Opening Ceremony on 8 May 2023 was broadcasted live on multiple social media platforms and viewed by over 13,000 online audience. Under the theme of “Research Excellence for Societal Impacts”, some 100 internationally renowned experts shared their knowledge and insights. The Conference had 15 streams focusing on three core areas: advanced technologies and manufacturing, good health and well-being, and smart and sustainable cities. Besides insightful keynote and discussion sessions, the programme also comprised laboratory visits and presentations of selected research papers. At the closing ceremony, Prof. CHEN Qingyan, Director of PAIR and Chair Professor of Building Thermal Science of PolyU, said, “I am pleased that the Conference served as a platform for fruitful exchange of cutting-edge research and innovative technologies.” Moving forward, PAIR will continue to harness PolyU’s research strengths and deepen interdisciplinary collaboration to spearhead interdisciplinary work in frontier areas such as advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, carbon neutrality, Chinese medicine innovation, deep space exploration, future food, intelligent wearable systems, land and space, mental health, photonics, sharp vision, smart ageing, smart cities, smart energy, sports science and technology, sustainable urban development and many more.

The PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) Conference 2023, the first and the largest event in Hong Kong higher education dedicated to professional knowledge exchange on interdisciplinary research and development, commenced yesterday (8 May).
