PolyU scholar wins distinguished BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize 2024
Since the launch of the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize (STIP) in 2022, outstanding PolyU scholars have been recognised in different fields of the award each year. This year, Professor Chai Yang, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science and Professor in the Department of Applied Physics, has been awarded the honour in the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics category. He was recognised for his contributions to developing disruptive in-sensor computing paradigms for artificial vision sensors, which enable information processing directly within the sensors. This innovation enhances computational efficiency and sensor functionalities for Internet of Things applications. Each awardee receives a HK$2 million cash prize.
Today’s AI relies on digital hardware, which struggles with running AI algorithms, especially when handling massive, unstructured data from sensors. As the Internet of Things grows, data transfer between sensors and computers faces significant challenges in terms of energy efficiency, speed, and security.
To address this challenge, Professor Chai proposed a bioinspired in-sensor computing paradigm that transforms how AI works at the sensor level. His innovation minimises the need for frequent data transfers to external computing units, enhances computational efficiency, and enriches sensor capabilities. It is highlighted in the US Semiconductor Research Corporation’s Decadal Plan.
Professor Chai’s work on bioinspired in-sensor vision adaptation was recognised as one of the Top 10 Hong Kong Innovation Technology News in 2022, and his work on in-sensor motion perception was selected as one of the China Chip10 Sciences in 2023.
Professor Chai is recently listed in the World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists 2024 lists by Stanford University in the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Additionally, he is an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, Vice President of the Physical Society of Hong Kong, and a Member of the Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences.
The STIP, established by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation and sponsored by the BOCHK, aims to facilitate the development of science and technology innovation in Hong Kong by rewarding outstanding individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to science and technology innovation in Hong Kong.
