Collaborative Research Seminar & Workshop | Technology Matters - Innovation for Future

ITDO was honored to have Mr. Charles Ai [艾超], Vice President, Technology Cooperation & Head, Early Stage Investment, R&D of Huawei Technologies, to be the guest speaker on “Technology Matters – Innovation for Future”, which served as the second episode of its collaborative research and workshop series.  The morning session was a seminar held at N002, Lim Por Yen Lecture Theatre on PolyU campus on October 17, 2014 (Friday). With more than 15 years of experience in telecommunications industry as well as reputable expertise in business development, R&D and marketing, Mr. Ai had attracted an enthusiastic audience of over 90 guests from PolyU and other academic institutions attending the seminar. Mr. Ai shared his novel vision and views on the role and importance of innovation in blueprinting our future from a strategic perspective. Followed by the seminar, Mr. Ai and his senior R&D team on Huawei’s Early Stage Investment further participated in the theme-based workshop in the afternoon to meet and exchange insights individually with about 15 PolyU professors from 7 different departments on a variety of research topics including Next-G optical communications, Big Data & Mining and GEO informatics and explore the respective strategic collaborations with PolyU in upcoming years.    To view the snapshop of the Seminar and Workshop, please visit here.

The First Annual Meeting of the Intellectual Property Assessment Committee

The First Annual Meeting of the Intellectual Property Assessment Committee [IPAC] was held on July 3, 2014 with the aim of soliciting recommendations from both the industry leaders and PolyU’s academia on strategic initiatives to further improve the University’s existing regime of intellectual property [IP] management. The meeting was kicked off with the welcome remarks delivered by the Chairman, Ir Professor Ping-kong Alexander Wai, Vice-President of Research Development of PolyU. He expressed his heart-felt thanks on behalf of the University to the members for their continuous support to the Committee since its establishment. The members were invited to share their illuminating views, edge-cutting insights as well as valuable experience in their respective professions in the architecture of a sustainable model for PolyU’s IP management. The Committee would further submit the thoughtful and inspirational inputs from the members for PolyU's Knowledge Transfer Committee’s consideration in the formulation of PolyU’s strategies in regard to the portfolio management and business potential exploration of IP. 2014 BIO International Convention & Study Mission

PolyU ITDO joined the Hong Kong Biotechnology Delegation as an exhibitor of the Hong Kong Pavilion at the 2014 BIO International Convention held in San Diego, California and a delegate of the business mission to Los Angeles and San Diego to visit biotech companies, research institutes and industry associations. The convention is one of the most representative events for the biotech industry every year, furnishing industry players with the updates of the latest trends and development. ITDO showcased PolyU's capabilities in drug discovery, development & delivery, biomedical engineering, medical devices & diagnostics, rehabilitation sciences, optometry and ophthalmology, biological imaging, and other research expertise. PolyU Ranks First Among HK Tertiary Institutions in U.S. Utility Patents Granted in 2013

PolyU is honored to receive the accolade from the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) as being named a Top 100 Worldwide University in U.S. Patents Granted in 2013. The National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association publishes a report listing Top 100 Worldwide Universities granted the most U.S. utility patents with data obtained from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on an annual basis. In 2013, PolyU was granted a total of 30 U.S. Utility Patents in 2013 and was ranked the 67th on the global list, topped among tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. Meeting with GE Healthcare to Explore Research Collaboration Opportunities

ITDO organized a meeting between PolyU researchers and GE Healthcare. Dr. Xiangli Chen, President at the GE China Technology Center, Dr. Bing Zhang, China Technology Growth Leader at GE China, and Dr. Xiaodong Han, Lead Engineer of GE Global Research had a fruitful exchange with Professor Ping-kong Alex Wai, PolyU’s Vice-President of Research Development and the Interim Head of PolyU’s Interdisciplinary Division of Biomedical Engineering Professor Yong-ping Zheng. Receiving Shunde Delegation, Signing of MOU between PolyU & Shunde Government

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The People's Government of Shunde District, Foshan City (Shunde Government)on 9 January 2014 with a view to promoting exchanges and encouraging collaboration between PolyU and the Shunde Government / Shunde high-technology industries. A delegation from the high-technology sector, led by a Shunde Government official, also visited PolyU to understand more about its R&D activities as well its technology transfer and commercialization process. The exchanges between PolyU and the Shunde community is expected to be stepped up, fostering the development of more collaborative research, and hence more deliverables. PolyU is keen to provide more concrete R&D and commercialization support to the Shunde high-technology industry to help realize related innovations, ultimately driving the economic development in the Shunde region and national scales. ITDO has been facilitating conversations between PolyU and Shunde companies since signing of the MOU. For more information, please refer to PolyU's media release of the event. Establishment of the Intellectual Property Assessment Committee (IPAC)

PolyU has established the IPAC as per recommendation of the Knowledge Transfer Committee of the PolyU Council. The IPAC, commissioned to improve the IP assessment process at PolyU, will work closely with the ITDO to conduct IP assessment and to provide advice on IP matters. Chaired by Ir Professor Ping-kong Alexander Wai, Vice President (Research Development), the committee consists of internal members from PolyU including Deans and Heads of all faculties and academic departments, and external members comprising a pool of prominent businessmen and industrialists from various industries in Hong Kong. PolyU has one of the strongest patent portfolios among the universities and research institutes in Hong Kong. With the establishment of IPAC, we aspire to further enhance the evaluation and management of our intellectual property assets and to significantly improve the quality of our patent portfolio and the commercialization potential of our inventions. 理大两项研究开发技术支持运动员专业发展 获运动科研资助计划资助

香港理工大学(理大)在运动科研资助计划(SSRFS)首轮结果中获得两项拨款,资助合共逾1370万港元,与香港体育学院(体院)合作开展两项运动科学研究,透过先进科技及技术,支持香港精英运动员发展及为未来大型赛事做好准备。其中一个项目,旨在开发一个基於视觉的分析系统,运用人工智慧等,及时向单车教练团队提供全面的科学数据。另一项获资助项目, 聚焦为残奥会运动员提供不同领域的个性化辅助装置,包括但不限於轮椅剑撃丶硬地滚球丶羽毛球丶乒乓球等。 自行车道视频智慧 建筑资讯学讲座教授 李恒教授 此项目旨在开发一种基於视觉的单车赛 分析解决方案,由五个部分组成:视频拍摄丶资料传输丶AI处理丶资料分析应用和硬件。通过利用红外线感测器和SRM功率计,采用预先训练好的深度学习模型来分析比赛视频,以获得选手的等级丶速度和功率输出。该系统可以及时分析选手在比赛中的统计数据和技术特点,从而协助教练团队掌握及辨识战术局限,还可以分析比赛场地和环境对选手表现的影响,快速掌握对手的技术特点,准确评估其表现和状态。 与目前依靠人工收集技术资料的做法相比,该系统不只节省人力及时间,其设置平台可以累积运动员的历史数据,提供全面分析支援训练,采集和综合的资料,包括心率丶功率丶速度丶时间丶位置等,可用作评估运动员的战术熟练程度和训练强度。这个基於视觉的演算法模型,第一版将在近期完成,有望可在杭州举行的第十九届亚运会上进行测试,并为教练团队提供参考。 残奥运动员辅助装置的个性化服务 生物医学工程学系系主任兼讲座教授 张明教授 量身定制的的辅助设备,可以支援残奥会运动发挥水准,除了可减轻他们的负荷重量,同时有助提升训练强度。此项目将根据残奥会运动员的个人需求,提供各种辅助设备的个性化服务,包括义肢丶矫形器丶轮椅和相关设备,以增强他们的信心和表现。此项目将引进先进的元件,如碳纤维义肢,让运动员可以有不同尝试及选择,配置最适合自己的组合。另将采用更轻丶更坚固的材料制作轮椅,从而达至更敏捷灵活的效果,对羽毛球和乒乓球选手尤其重要,透过定制手柄部件,可改善抓握感和平衡感,为提升舒适度会定订轮椅坐垫。 此项目还将研发各种可擕式辅助设备,如为轮椅击剑训练提供折叠式脚垫;为硬地滚球项目优化坡道,及开发可擕式测力板协助确定球的重心。此外,研究团队将向教练及运动员介绍辅助设备和技术的最新及国际发展情况,并根据研究成果和使用者意见优化装置。
