From pen and paper, through satellites, code and animation - in this lecture, Marco Hernandez will present how The New York Times stories combine traditional tools with cutting-edge technology using tools we often build from scratch in-house.

Marco Hernandez joined The New York Times in 2021 but has worked in newsrooms for over 20 years, including Reuters in Singapore, La Nación in Costa Rica and the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. He has received hundreds of international awards, including “World’s Best Designer” from the Society for News Design in 2021. He was part of the team that won the 2023 and 2024 Pulitzer Prize for covering the war in Ukraine and Gaza. He got the 2023 Majeri Award for innovation and leadership in journalism from Ball State University in Indiana, USA.
