Call for PhD Proposals – Applications Now Open (2021/22)

Each year, the School of Design accepts new PhD proposals (Research Postgraduate (RPg) to its research faculty. The School seeks to attract talented individuals, demonstrating basic or applied research in a range of design areas. Besides theoretical studies, the School also encourages multidisciplinary research. In particular, the School has identified additional areas of interest: (i) Design and Data, (ii) AI, (iii) User Experience Design, (iv) Co-design, (v) Healthcare Design, (vi) Entrepreneurship, and (vii) Service Design, over and above its regular research emphasis of Social Design, Design Economy and Design Making. The application deadline for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme is set for 1 December 2020. All applications should be made through the online system. More information is available here.

Dr Yiying WU

Newly Onboard: Research Assistant Professor Dr Yiying WU

  A warmest welcome from PolyU Design to our new Research Assistant Professor Dr Yiying WU. Yiying (aka Bow) WU works with the aesthetics and power of design experiments in everyday life for reimagining and debating a more just and sustainable society. Conceptually, her academic and practice focuses is on socially-engaged design, including service design, design anthropology, design fiction and participatory design. Methodologically, her research builds on Research through Design (RtD) or Constructive design research. She builds on discourses of different communities within and outside design academia. Her work has been published in conferences of CHI, DRS, IASDR, and social science conferences of EPIC, American Sociological Association Annual Meetings. Also, she has received art grants for site-specific performance arts and published work in film and art festivals. She received her Doctor of Arts on community-based design from Aalto University, Helsinki. There she also started her exploration of design fiction in the post-doc projects in departments of design and business. The 16 awardees for 2020 are all Hong Kong design practitioners or graduates of 35 years old or under who have made refreshing contributions to Hong Kong’s creative industries across a range of disciplines. This year, 13 of them will receive a financial sponsorship amount up to HK$5,000,000 in total to undertake 6 to 12 month work experiences or 6 to 18 month study experiences abroad. Sponsored by Create HK, HKDI and PolyU Design, these young designers will have the opportunity to gain unique experience at world renowned design firms or institutions.

Student received Exceptional Honour at TEAM20 Competition

YAO Xiaoqian Ariana who is our recent graduate of Environment and Interior Design received Exceptional Honour of the Category of Urban Planning at the TEAM20 Architecture and Planning Graduation Projects Competition. The competition is participated mainly by university graduates from China (including Taiwan and Hong Kong), organised by Cross-Strait Urban and Industrial Planning Federation, Taiwan Institute of Urban Planning, and All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce. YAO Xiaoqian Ariana Project: The new type of community Tutor: Anneli Giencke  This is a site base narrative project, the object of this project is to tell about a new community strategy, which will provide a new community feeling by transforming existing public housing in Hong Kong. So that people living there will be more harmony and engagement in neighborhood relations. I hope the small groups of families come together to become small villages inside the building which happening in 2030. As for the research, 80% of food comes from imports which should produce much CO2 during transport in Hong Kong. It has a great impact on climate change. Therefore, we need to build a local sustainable development system. We should start with agriculture and energy ways to get our autonomy back. Read more

Three Environment & Interior Design students named The Innovative Stars 2020

Three students are named The Innovative Stars at the 2020 World Chinese Entrepreneurs Award for Innovation. The awards were announced at the 17th World Summit of Chinese Entrepreneurs in Macau. Honorable Mention at Architecture Master Prize 2020: 'Arch-ology' | EID

We are happy to announce that our recent graduate Miss Kitty Lee Yuen Yi’s ‘Arch-ology’ (Environment and Interior Design, 2020) has received the Honorable Mention in Interior Design / Other Interior Design at the Architecture Master Prize 2020. Her work was also the winner of Wheelock Interior Design Internship Program (WIND) in August, and is being exhibited at the Foyer Gallery as one of the Tutor Choice projects. The project’s supervising tutor is Dr Gerhard Bruyns.  The Architecture Master Prize is an international competition celebrating creativity and innovation in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design. The prize is open to submissions on a global level, accepting entries from architects all around the world. Newly Onboard Assistant Professor Dr Shera Hyunyim PARK

PolyU Design welcomes Dr Shera Hyunyim PARK to join us as Assistant Professor with immediate effect.  Dr Shera H. Park received her PhD in service design from Royal College of Art, where her research investigated the impact of digital platforms, service ecosystem and service design from a human-centred approach and systemic orientation. She also has a bachelor’s degree in product design from Hong-Ik University and master’s degrees in art and media practice and in design for communication from the University of Westminster, London.  She began 14 years of industry experience as a designer at Hyundai Group and moved from design to marketing and ultimately to developing multidisciplinary projects across communication design, digital marketing and service strategy in her role as Head of Digital Communication for LG Electronics Europe. Her projects included a new service strategy and business model to improve London air quality, which she worked on with Open Data and Transport for London, serving predictable urban flow. This project was awarded ‘Winner for Business Innovation in the Private Sector’ at the Service Design Network.  Later, Dr Park worked as an Associate Lecturer at the Institution for Design Innovation at Loughborough University London. She contributed to teaching and dissertation supervision in the areas of service design, service innovation, service ecosystems and digital platforms for the design innovation master’s programme. She also gave Studio Talk in MA Service Design and Talk for Designing Intelligence into our Cities in Intelligent Mobility Design Centre at the Royal College of Art, London.
