Creative summer workshops for young talents to explore the world of design

What design is about? 100 students from different secondary schools were guided to find out their answers in our Summer Programme held on 9 July, as one of the concurrent activities of the Annual Show 2019. The 4th-6th formers joined two out of the four workshops offered by our undergraduate programmes of Advertising Design, Communication Design, Environment and Interior Design, and Product Design by their own preferences, and were given a tour of the show to learn how a design project was created from just an idea as read examples. The Summer Programme is the annual activity that PolyU Design organised to cultivate the young people’s interest in design and to help them identify the right study path that may lead to a suitable future career. Featured Alumnus: Comma Leung, founder of Mosi Mosi to design products for people with disabilities

Comma Leung (Visual Communication Design, 2015) is the founder of Mosi Mosi, a creative-driven studio taking a human-centered, design-based approach to help people live a better life. Back to 2015 when Comma was working on her final year project, the intention of addressing the needs of the underprivileged class which are less concerned by the main stream design industry had motivated her to set up Mosi Mosi. Through communicating with the intellectually disabled, visually disabled and physically disabled, and observing their daily routine, Comma believed that tailor-made design could help improve their living quality. One of her project deliverables was a wallet that help the visually impaired identify banknotes by the size. What she designed are not merely products, but care and blessing to the people.  The project brought her the DFA Design Silver Award in 2016, Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award, Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation Jury’s Special mention and visual communication student award in 2015. Comma’s story is widely covered in the media. Let's take some time to go through some of those and learn more about her. Finger amputee prosthetic named Hong Kong Best Design at TechStyle for Social Good 2019

We feel so proud to know that Miss Wendy Law has recently received the Hong Kong Best Design Award among the 12 finalists at the Techstyle for Social Good International Competition 2019, with her Human Scale class project ‘Aesthesis - The partial hand accessories for amputees’ designed for her mother who lost her fingers in an accident. This finger amputee prosthetic is a 3D-printed decorative device made of both soft and hard materials. Compared with the existing products, it is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also lighter in weight and more breathable. It can help cover up the lost part while extending the residual finger to provide more finger functions, such as holding a mobile phone, to enhance users’ quality of lives. The winning project are being exhibited with other winners from the USA and UK at the Mills until 26 August; and at PolyU’s Fashion Gallery from 27 August to 22 September. Full Winners' List>> Wendy's story in the media: 專訪設計師羅詠欣  (Passion Times, 14 September 2019) 設計義肢手套 創造共融社會 (Oriental Daily, 8 August 2019) 孝女為母親設計精美義肢 (Epoch Times, 12 July 2019) (photo from Techstyle for Social Good International Competition)
