Angel Jump to Victory: Wong Hiu-ying Angel

The Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 has just ended, not long after the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. Hong Kong athletes have shown remarkable achievements at both Olympic Games. Aside from the Olympics, Hong Kong athletes continue their winning streak and among them is ITC alumna Ms Wong Hiu-ying Angel (BA, 2010) who won a bronze medal for the balance beam event at the 14th Taishan Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Doha, Qatar on 5 March 2022. She is the first athlete on the Hong Kong team who is a medal winner at this level of international competition. Blood, sweat and tears of a star athlete Angel has been involved with gymnastics since she was 4 years old. At first, it was just for fun, and little Angel never thought that she would be an athlete until she turned 11 years old and returned from Australia to Hong Kong . She continued her training in a gymnastics class with the Hong Kong Gymnastics Federation and was chosen as a member of the Hong Kong team. After joining the Hong Kong team, training took up most of Angel’s time. Every day, she trained hard after school for four hours until 8:30 p.m. This training regime showed her passion and dedication for gymnastics. First Hong Kong gymnast to qualify for the Olympics No one in Hong Kong has ever been shortlisted for the Olympics gymnastics competition until the London Olympics in 2012, when Mr Shek Wai-hung and Angel were chosen to participate in the games. The London Olympics was definitely a breakthrough for Hong Kong gymnastics. Not only were there two Hong Kong athletes performing on the gymnastics stage for the first time, but Angel even labeled her jump and became the first Hong Kong athlete in the history of gymnastics to receive such naming rights. “I haven’t seen anyone tried this 'Angel Jump' in any official competition yet, only some video clips on Instagram that show others practicing the move,” Angel said. Missed Rio Olympics due to injury One of the worst fears of athletes is to sustain an injury, especially before a major competition. When Angel was busy practicing in 2015 for Olympic Games Rio 2016, she severely injured her left knee, which affected several ligaments of her knee joint. She had to undergo two operations and required a long period of recovery which forced her miss the games. Even though she is not as young as the other athletes and had been injured multiple times, she was still very determined to stay on the team. In 2019, she returned to the World Cup Competition. Starting all over again and succeeding At the age of 34, Angel described standing on the award podium as one of the important moments in her life, especially after several surgeries. “After many injuries and surgeries, the long recovery process has been full of struggles. The epidemic also affects training and competition since some of the team members have tested positive. Anyway, I just want everyone to finish the games safely.” Angel also said that the medal is proof of her abilities, which has also motivated her to continue to improve her performance. She hopes to compete in the Asian Games again in September this year. Applying knowledge learnt from ITC Aside from gymnastics, Angel is also a talented designer. An ITC graduate, she majored in fashion and textile design. She then applied the knowledge into designing and constructing  her costume for the London Olympics.   Photo credit: Angel's Instagram page and The Gymnastics Association of Hong Kong, China

Dr Jeongyeon Lee publishes in highly impactful journals

Dr Jeongyeon Lee, Research Assistant Professor of ITC and his collaborative teams recently published two journal review articles entitled “Chemical modification of ordered/disordered carbon nanostructures for metal hosts and electrocatalysts of lithium-air batteries” in InfoMat (IF: 25.405) and “Nanostructured Transition Metal Nitrides as Emerging Electrocatalysts for Water Electrolysis: Status and Challenges” in EnergyChem (expected IF 25). In the first paper, Dr Lee and his colleagues comprehensively review the recent progress in designs of carbon nanostructures for application in metal hosts, and as protective layers or bifunctional electrocatalysts of lithium-air batteries. The correlation among the crystalline, electronic, porous, and chemical structures and the electrochemical properties of carbon nanomaterials are discussed depending on their classification and characteristics. The rational methodology and future directions of various chemical modifications are also discussed, such as morphological control, hierarchical architecturing, heteroatom incorporation, and the formation of composites, for enhancing the electrochemical performance of anodes and cathodes. In the second paper, Dr Lee and his colleagues review the representative progress of transition metal nitride (TMN)-based catalysts in the synthetic strategies of both structural engineering and electronic engineering to improve electrocatalytic performance, especially in hydrogen and oxygen evolution and water splitting. This review article discusses the future challenges and research directions of nanostructured TMNs in the electrochemical energy fields for efficient preparation processes and performance enhancement. In terms of real applications, continuous research and breakthroughs are essential for developing nanostructured TMN-based catalysts for advanced water electrolysis, which can improve the quality of life. Dr Lee has been recently selected as Guest Associate Editor for the Frontiers in Chemistry journal. He has extensively published research articles in various journals that are related to energy storage and conversion applications during the past 3 years, including Advanced Energy Materials in 2020 (1 paper), Advanced Functional Materials in 2021 (1 paper), Chemical Engineering Journal in 2021 (1 paper), Small Methods in 2021 (2 papers), and 8 other SCIE papers.   References: 1. Next in Elderly Fashion Show Competition

As the leading fashion school in Hong Kong, ITC endeavours to not only contribute to the fashion industry and academia, but also the community and people in need. Between October 2021 and January 2022, ITC cooperated with the Kowloon City Baptist Church Neighbourhood Elderly Centre, Sustainable Fashion Apparel Association Limited (SFAA), Hong Kong Social Enterprise Incubation Centre Limited (HKSEIC), fellow institutes, and industry partners to organise the ‘Next in Elderly Fashion Show Competition’.  The project aims to create fashionable outfits for senior citizens whose children have migrated overseas, and express how much the youths care about the elderly.  Led by Dr Haze Ng and Ms Jackie Leung, eight ITC students participated in the project and created 16 tailor-made outfits. The participating students are: Cheng Manqi, Daphne Cheng Chau Hung, Quinn Choi Lok Yi, Joey Kuo Chit, Marcus Ma Hoi Yan, Phyllis Tang Chung Yau, Yoyo Wong Lai Ching, Ding Yu Hiu Tung, Harriet Throughout the process, the students adopted an empathic co-design approach and put into practice classroom learnings to develop outfits together with the beneficiaries and industry collaborators. The students skillfully applied advanced laser engraving technology and tailoring techniques acquired from a summer course in 2021 on cheongsam making, and created unique fashion outfits with a high degree of practicability. During the project process, the students showed their attentiveness and youthful perspectives while the elderly shared their life experiences and stories. The communication between the two different generations touched both parties and created a meaningful design experience filled with warmth.  All 30 outfits created from the project were presented by the elderly and students in the ‘Next In Elderly Fashion Show’, which was held on 3 January 2022 at Ocean Park Hong Kong. The fashion show was livestreamed to the overseas families of the elderly participants as a form of an online reunion and celebration of the lunar new year. Our Year 3 student Daphne Cheng was awarded the Design Excellence Award and secured an internship sponsored by Stella Blu Textile Limited. ITC graduate collaborates with Hang Seng Bank’s virtual KOL Hazel

ITC graduate Octavia Hau (BA, 2021) accepted an invitation from Metro Broadcast to take part in an evening live broadcast on 9th March 2022 along with Hang Seng Bank to share their recent collaboration effort. Octavia was one of the finalists of the PolyU Fashion Show 2021, and was invited by Hang Seng Bank to style an outfit for Hazel, a new digital banking ambassador for Hang Seng from “another world”. Hazel is the first virtual key opinion leader (KOL) in Hong Kong’s banking industry. She is the product of digital technology and creativity, and embodies present-day lifestyles that traverse between the physical and digital worlds. Octavia’s featured graduate collection is titled “Dive into the Sea”, which was inspired by betta fish. Betta fish are beautiful but aggressive. To demonstrate the strength of these fish, the silhouette of the design for Hazel is neat and sharp. Octavia also made use of thin and light fabric to best convey the appearance of a fishtail with reflection of light from different angles. “I think my collection is tailor made for Hazel and modern women. Women can be beautiful and strong. They can also be brave and powerful like the betta fish to stand alone without fear. The collaboration was a precious and an unforgettable experience for me”, said Octavia during the live broadcast. The live broadcast review is available at: https://fb.watch/bEkp6xAEtU/

ITC admits three top achievers with 5*/5** in five subjects

Three high-calibre students with top scores in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) examination 2021 have been admitted to the BA (Honours) Scheme in Fashion and Textiles at ITC. A one-off entry scholarship was granted to these outstanding students to recognize their academic potential. Prof. Jintu Fan, Head and Chair Professor of ITC, had this to say about the competence of the applicants: “This year has been an exceptionally difficult year for HKDSE candidates as they faced different challenges and various uncertainties due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet we see them striving for self-improvement and achieving outstanding results." "I am thankful for the support of my parents and friends. Most importantly, thanking myself for putting in effort and my determination to choose ITC.” Jennifer, Raimondi College graduate One of these academically outstanding students, Lai Cheuk-ying Jennifer, received an admission scholarship of HK$35,000 with a score of 30.5# for her five best HKDSE subjects. Jennifer stated that “It all started with a concert”. She was impressed by the costumes and styling of Hins Cheung at his 2020 concert, which were created by three ITC alumni Derek (DEMO.), Kit Wan (Kit Wan Studios) and Constance Lee (ConStyle). She aspires to their success by starting her academic studies at ITC. After receiving an outstanding HKDSE score, Jennifer’s parents asked if she wanted to study abroad. However, she insisted that she wanted to stay in Hong Kong. “I was surprised that the local designers can create such fascinating designs!” She has confidence in the local fashion industry and would like to create her own brand in the future. “Maybe one day Hins Cheung will wear my designs.” A graduate of Raimondi College, Jennifer majored in Biology, Chemistry, and the Visual Arts. Despite achieving two 5s in Biology and Chemistry, her true passion is in the Visual Arts. “I enjoy the process of making my own garments. The sense of achievement gained is beyond words after seeing the final product.” She sees ITC as the bridge to reach her goals where she can equip herself and grow her networks. “There are many talented students at ITC and I can learn so much from them. ITC is a place where I can build my networks.”  In the coming years, she plans to engage in different aspects of university life. “I would like to be in an intern for local brands like INITIAL and DEMO.” Her targeted destination for the exchange programme is the London College of Fashion. HKDSE exams are always a nerve-racking time for students so Jennifer offers some insights  to those who will be taking the DSE. “It can be stressful and tiring during the HKSDE, but I knew that it was only going to last a very short period of time.” She balanced her study and rest time. “After 6-8 hours of studying, I just laid down on the sofa and watched TV. I would suggest not to push yourself too hard.” She also shares an final tip to prepare for the examinations. “I brought my study notes everywhere with me and glanced at the pages when I was on the road, even if my intentions were not to review or memorise anything. I found that it is really important and effective to become familiar with the syllabus.” "As long as I am determined enough to achieve a goal, I would do my best to achieve it. I was determined to gain admission to ITC regardless of my final DSE score." Karina, Our Lady's College graduate. Another high achiever is To Hang-yin Karina who is a graduate of Our Lady's College. She received an admission scholarship of HK$25,000 with a score of 27.5# for her five best subjects. When Karina was a child, she often dreamt of studying fashion design. She loved going to adventure parks to play mix-and-match games. Her parents also love fashion styling and shopping, and in particular, clothing. Therefore, this childhood environment 'nurtured' her interest in fashion styling. Her dream job is to be a fashion stylist. Being professionally trained at ITC in the next coming four years on fabrics, materials, and tailoring, she believes that she will be fully equipped for a career in the fashion industry. Karina struggled internally when completing her JUPAS form. She was worried that her parents would not support her decision to apply to ITC. In the end, Karina’s parents gave her their unconditional support, even though they knew that Karina had a variety of options from HKU and CUHK due to her outstanding HKDSE results.  Karina also shared her experience with admission and provided some tips. "You don't need to rush the preparation of your portfolio during the examination months, don't waste your precious time for reviewing the exam material." As for setting a review timetable, Karina believes tha everyone has their own schedule and pace of studying. She did not set a specific time for herself to review the materials because "It will be more stressful for me." Karina believes that it is not uncommon that ITC students do not have Visual Arts knowledge. "Having studied Visual Arts is certainly an advantage, which provides the foundation for drawing, and allows you to pick up fashion drawing much more easily. However, all students will be trained to draw and paint at ITC. So they don't really need to worry too much about not being able to adapt to the syllabus." “Hirohiko Araki – my muse for my fashion path.” Shirley, Christian and Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School graduate Lin Tsz-wing Shirley, who received a scholarship of HK$15,000 with a score of 21.5# for her best 5 subjects, is passionate about art and studied Visual Arts during her secondary school years. “I am interested in any kind of design, especially fashion design. Fashion is art too, as the garment could be a form of art, allowing us to express ourselves." “I did a lot of research about ITC before finalizing my JUPAS choices. I found that there are many learning resources. I felt that ITC would a great place for me to achieve my fashion dreams." Among the five specialisms in the BA scheme programme, Shirley is interested in Intimate Apparel and Activewear as her specialism. She was impressed by the amazing work of the final year students during the freshman seminar. She would like to explore more about the industry, for example, the techniques and the crafting processes. She is also inspired by Victoria’s Secret and the fashionable intimate apparel designs that highlight the beauty of a woman’s body. Shirley is no ordinary girl. She is not interested in the “Five must-do items at University*”.  She just wants to stay focused on her academics and help other people. “When I first came to PolyU, I felt so nervous and lost. Luckily, the student ambassador gave me a lot of guidance and support. Wouldn’t it be meaningful to guide someone like me in the future?” *study, apply for dormitory stay, join a committee of a university-based student organisation, accept a part-time job, and start a love-relationship Shirley says, “I want to thank all my allies at PolyU who gave me tremendous support and interesting learning experiences last semester. I would also like to give a big thank to all of my secondary school classmates for caring about me a lot, and my teachers for giving me valuable advice and encouragement.” Shirley shared a simple tip to students who are facing the DSE: Practice makes perfect. "I know it may sound really cliché but that’s what I did when preparing for the HKDSE, especially Visual Arts. You really need to do a lot of prep work before and during the examination weeks. Stick to your goals and you will achieve them one day."   #The PolyU scoring system giving bonus points to applicants achieving 5 or above, where Level 5** = 8.5; 5*= 7; 5 = 5.5.
