PolyU School of Optometry supports HK Paralympic Committee 1st Classification Conference

The 1st Classification Conference of the China Hong Kong Paralympic Committee was successfully held on March 22, 2025. As a supporting organisation, the School of Optometry at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University was represented by Prof. Andrew Lam, Professor and Associate Head of the school, who participated in a panel discussion titled “Future Development of the Classification for Hong Kong Para Sports”. Together with other guests, they discussed and expressed opinions on issues such as: How to optimize the classification system? How to effectively promote the classification system to the public and stakeholders? How can we ensure greater fairness in the classification process? The seminar was themed “Classification in Para Sports – A New Era”. Classification is a crucial issue for the development of para-sports and has a significant impact on the fairness of para-sports. The seminar shared the latest developments in classification from the International Paralympic Committee and explored the future development direction of classification for para sports in the Hong Kong, China region. Over 700 participants, either online or in person, attended the conference from 17 countries and regions. These included classifiers, coaches, athletes, physiotherapists, medical personnel, sports administrators, government officials, representatives from international para sports organizations, representatives from international sports federations, and representatives from various regional Paralympic Committees. Prof. Carly Lam’s Research on Myopia Prevalence Among HK Children Recognized as One of the Century's Most Impactful Papers in OPO

We are thrilled to congratulate Prof. Carly Lam, Adjunct Professor at the School of Optometry, for her outstanding achievement. Her paper, titled "Prevalence of Myopia Among Hong Kong Chinese Schoolchildren: Changes Over Two Decades," has been honoured as one of the top 12 original research papers published in the last 100 years in the journal Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics (OPO). Published in 2012, Prof. Lam's groundbreaking work has distinguished itself as the 3rd most cited original paper in terms of average citations per year since its publication in OPO, spanning the years 1925 to 2025. In addition to this remarkable recognition, Prof. Lam was awarded the Bernard Gilmartin OPO Award by the College of Optometrists in London, UK, in 2015, for the same paper of hers as the highly-regarded paper published in OPO in the preceding five years. The paper was a collaborative effort, co-authored with Dr Lam Chin-hang, Dr Sam Cheng Chi-kwan, and Dr Lily Chan Yee-lai. Special Olympics Hong Kong - Healthy Athletes Programme 2025

 19 students and optometrists from the School of Optometry, PolyU, along with volunteer optometrists from The Hong Kong Society of Professional Optometrists and The Hong Kong Association of Private Practice Optometrists, participated in the "Healthy Athletes" programme organized by Special Olympics Hong Kong on Saturday, 22 February. They conducted vision tests, prescription checks, ocular health assessments, etc., for 84 Special Olympics athletes and prescribed glasses or provided sunglasses for those in need. Since 2001, the School of Optometry at PolyU has been collaborating with other healthcare professionals to support the Special Olympics Hong Kong’s “Healthy Athletes" programme annually. Through these eye health screenings, they aim to improve the health conditions of Special Olympics athletes while also collecting, analyzing, and publishing data on the athletes' health conditions and needs to enhance their sporting experience. PhD Student Nandini RAVI received Best Student Presenter Award

Ms Nandini RAVI, PhD student at the School, has been awarded the Best Student Presenter Award for her exceptional performance in the Research Seminars in Semester 1, AY2024/25. Her presentation was titled "L/M cone responses using global flash MOFO mfERG in myopic children". The School hosts the Research Seminar Series biannually to foster academic dialogue among students and offer them a platform to present their research findings.

Dr ZHOU Liping’s team wins Special Prize and Gold Medal at 4th Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions Hong Kong

Co-developed by Dr Liping ZHOU, Co-Principal Investigator, CEVR; Research Assistant Professor, School of Optometry and the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, PolyU and Dr Chau-minh PHAN, Principal Investigator, CEVR, the “Eye-On-a-Chip Technology” won the CAI Award Invention and Innovation – China Association of Inventions and Gold Medal at the 4th Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions Hong Kong (AEII).  Eye-On-a-Chip Technology aims to provide eyemimicking environment for testing eye products such as contact lens materials, multipurpose solutions, eye drops, and pharmaceuticals, etc. This product utilizes microfluidics technology to simulate tear flow, enables real-time imaging and employs a patented automatic image analysis algorithm. Its design allows for easy and safe installation while minimizing material usage. As a result, it saves researchers and pharmaceutical companies both money and time, simplifies the research process, and generates more accurate and reliable clinically relevant data.   Organised by The Hong Kong Exporters’ Association in partnership with Palexpo, the organiser of the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, this year’s AEII attracted about 140 inventions from Hong Kong, mainland China and other Asian countries and regions. AEII is a prestigious annual exhibition and competition dedicated to innovations and inventions in Asia. It brings together scholars, experts, and inventors from around the world to showcase a diverse range of groundbreaking inventions and solutions.

New FAAO Achieved - Dr Rachel Chun and Ms Daisy Leung

PolyU School of Optometry proudly announces that Dr Rachel Chun, Assistant Professor, and Ms Daisy Leung, Optometrist, have been awarded the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) Fellowship. This significant achievement reflects their unwavering dedication to maintaining the highest standards in optometric care, commitment to evidence-based practice, and pursuit of lifelong learning. The fellowship process was comprehensive and demanding, requiring in-depth research, a thorough literature review, and the submission of detailed written case reports. Their efforts culminated in a successful oral examination conducted by a subcommittee of their peers. This accomplishment is a testament to their expertise and professionalism in the field of optometry.
