Reflections by School of Optometry Student Ambassador 2023/24
Oriana Wong
I am honored to be selected as a Student Ambassador for the School of Optometry. This role has provided me with incredible opportunities to participate in various events, such as hosting the White Coat Ceremony, Student Award Ceremony, and the International Conference on Vision and Eye Research. These experiences have not only deepened my understanding of the optometry field but also allowed me to grow personally and professionally. Stepping out of my comfort zone to speak in front of large audiences has been both challenging and rewarding. I am immensely grateful to the school for trusting me with these responsibilities and for helping me develop confidence and leadership skills. Being a Student Ambassador has truly broadened my perspective and enriched my journey in optometry.

Anson Tong
If I have a chance to organize another sharing, I would share some equipment (e.g. Direct ophthalmoscope or volk lens) or examination procedure that optometrists encounter frequently to spark the audience's interests.

Being an SO Student Ambassador was a transformative experience. It enhanced my social and presentation skills, particularly through opportunities like serving as the MC for the White Coat Ceremony. This role helped me overcome my fear of public speaking and boosted my confidence.Additionally, I deepened my knowledge of the optometry field by promoting our programme during public events such as the PolyU Information Days. Interacting with secondary school students allowed me to reflect on our school's unique qualities. Besides, the conversation with the public gave me insight into their perceptions of our field, prompting me to consider how to become a future competent optometrist meeting future needs.
Overall, the SO Student ambassador scheme was a rewarding journey that offered valuable growth.
